Moody’s Slashes 2026 India Growth Forecast after warning that rising energy prices and global tensions could slow the country’s economic momentum. The global rating agency Moody’s Investors Service reduced India’s GDP growth estimate for 2026 to 6%, down from its earlier forecast of 6.8%.

According to Moody’s, weaker private consumption, slower investment, and reduced industrial activity are the main reasons for the downgrade. Rising oil and energy prices linked to geopolitical tensions have also increased pressure on the economy.

Moody’s Slashes 2026 India Growth Forecast while noting that India remains vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy prices because the country depends heavily on imported crude oil and natural gas.

The agency also trimmed India’s growth projection for 2027 to around 6%, citing continued global uncertainty and possible supply disruptions. However, Moody’s believes the economy could recover gradually if energy markets stabilize and domestic demand strengthens.

Officials said the outlook reflects strong domestic demand and stable macroeconomic conditions.

Services emerged as the main growth driver, expanding by 9.9 per cent at constant prices. Financial services, real estate, professional services, and public administration led the surge. Trade, hotels, transport, communication, and broadcasting services recorded an estimated growth of 7.5 per cent during the year.

Manufacturing and construction posted a combined growth of 7 per cent, while agriculture grew by 3.1 per cent. Real private consumption expenditure rose by 7 per cent, supported by income tax exemptions and GST rate reductions announced in the Union Budget. Gross fixed capital formation increased by 7.8 per cent, reflecting stronger investment activity.

Economic momentum strengthened in FY26, with GDP growth reaching 8.2 per cent in the second quarter. The economy grew at 8 per cent during the first half of the year. Despite global headwinds and US tariff hikes, India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with the IMF projecting growth above 6 per cent in FY26.

A total of 4,975 delegates from 60 countries attended the summit, including 630 international representatives. Major global companies expressed strong interest in establishing industries in the state. The government estimated ₹10 lakh crore investments, but the final figure reached ₹13.26 lakh crore, which is 30 percent higher.

The coalition government focused on industrial development from day one. Regular SIPB meetings were held to approve projects without delay. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu visited Singapore, UAE, and London to invite investors, while IT Minister Nara Lokesh met investors in the United States, Australia, and London. Their outreach gained a strong response at the summit and boosted global confidence in Andhra Pradesh.

A total of 613 MoUs were signed covering various sectors, offering 16.31 lakh employment opportunities. Of the total investments, ₹7.63 lakh crore deals were signed in the presence of the Chief Minister. Over 700 B2B meetings were held during the summit, and top corporate groups participated in discussions focused on technology, healthcare, aviation, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, and tourism growth.

The state projected itself as a stable and transparent investment destination. The government now aims to convert MoUs into ground-level implementation through faster infrastructure expansion, skill development, and special technology hubs. The summit positioned Andhra Pradesh as a competitive global investment hub once again.

Speaking at the Kotak International India Insight Summit in New York, Kotak Mahindra AMC Managing Director Nilesh Shah said India’s GDP could cross $4 trillion by 2025.

Shah credited strong domestic consumption, a vibrant services sector, and expanding manufacturing for the country’s progress. He noted that even with a per capita income of just $2,940, India contributes nearly 10% to global growth and 18% on a purchasing power parity basis. “India is the engine of the global growth train,” he said, highlighting the nation’s growing influence.

India’s equity markets have grown 13.7% annually since 2020, outpacing most emerging markets. Shah also praised the government’s fiscal discipline. He pointed out that India reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio even after the pandemic — a rare feat among major economies.

He added that India’s open economy and easy access for global investors strengthen its global standing. With tech giants like Meta, Google, and Amazon operating freely, India is emerging as an innovation-driven leader powering the next phase of world growth.

On Monday, MCX Gold December futures rose 1.62% to ₹1,23,313 per 10 grams, while MCX Silver December futures increased 3.44% to ₹1,51,577 per kg.

Globally, spot gold touched $4,060 per ounce, marking its eighth consecutive weekly gain. The surge follows renewed US-China trade tensions, with China warning against new tariffs and urging a return to negotiations.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may reduce interest rates in the coming months as inflation expectations have dropped sharply. The Bank of Baroda said the repo rate remains at 5.5 per cent, but RBI can ease rates to support growth.

Recent GST rate cuts and festive season spending are expected to boost domestic consumption. These measures could counter global economic challenges and strengthen India’s growth this quarter. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept a neutral stance while watching tariff changes and GST rationalisation.

India’s growth projection for FY26 has risen to 6.8 per cent from 6.5 per cent. Inflation is now expected at 2.6 per cent instead of 3.1 per cent. High-frequency indicators like air passenger traffic, port cargo, and rail freight show slight slowdown. Meanwhile, diesel consumption, government spending, and bank credit have improved.

The Bank of Baroda estimated GST cuts and festive spending could raise consumption by Rs 12 lakh crore to Rs 14 lakh crore. Wedding-related expenses may contribute a large share. Strong domestic consumption keeps India as the fastest-growing major economy in the world.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted India’s need to navigate a multi-polar world and prepare to emerge as a key global power. He emphasized challenges like supply chain risks, technological competition, and anti-globalization trends. India must prioritize its national interest in foreign policy, he added.

JNU Chancellor Kanwal Sibal described the international environment as a “managed disorder” and noted the rising influence of China. SIS Vice Chancellor Prof Santishree D Pandit celebrated the summit’s aim to combine tradition with modernity and craft Bharatiya-centric narratives for diplomacy and policy.

The summit featured discussions on economic resilience, strategic autonomy, and digital diplomacy. Speakers highlighted India’s growth from a minor global contributor to the fourth-largest economy. Experts stressed that India must shape global agendas rather than react to them. The summit continues, with panels exploring ways to strengthen India’s international position amid rising geopolitical competition.

US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday. Trump called the conversation “very good” and highlighted discussions on economy and trade between the two nations.

Trump shared on Truth Social that both leaders plan to continue talks and meet in the near future, in Brazil and the US. He added that he enjoyed the call and expected stronger cooperation between the countries.

Lula also confirmed the call on X, recalling the good chemistry they shared during their brief meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York last month. Lula stressed that direct contact could restore the 201-year friendly relations between the two largest democracies in the West. He highlighted the US surplus with Brazil in goods and services.

The Brazilian President urged the US to lift tariffs on Brazilian goods. He may meet Trump again during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in late October. The call comes after the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil, part of broader tensions with BRICS nations. Trade talks with India have also resumed, aiming to address similar tariff issues.
