Officials confirmed that the trawlers, registered in Maharashtra, were fishing without authorisation, violating Goa’s maritime boundaries and endangering local livelihoods. Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar said the government will continue strict enforcement to protect marine ecology and support traditional fishermen.

Authorities brought the intercepted trawlers to the Captain of Ports in Panaji for further investigation. Surveillance along the coastline has increased, with patrol boats deployed and coordination strengthened between the Fisheries Department and Coastal Police.

Local fishermen welcomed the action, citing repeated concerns about out-of-State trawlers depleting fish stocks and affecting their income. The Fisheries Department warned violators of legal consequences, including fines and licence cancellations, and urged fishermen to report suspicious activity.

This operation follows similar action over the past two months, when five Karnataka-registered trawlers were seized. The government aims to deter illegal operations, safeguard Goa’s waters, and ensure sustainable fishing practices for local communities.
