The Goods and Services Tax (GST) 2.0 regime comes into effect today, bringing several changes that will affect consumer shopping bills across India. The government has introduced new compliance measures, digital reporting standards, and minor adjustments in tax rates for certain goods and services.

Under GST 2.0, businesses are required to adopt enhanced e-invoicing and QR code-based billing, aimed at increasing transparency and reducing tax evasion. Retailers and e-commerce platforms are also mandated to update their billing systems to reflect the new GST provisions. These changes will ensure that consumers get a more accurate view of taxes charged on every purchase.

While the standard GST rates for most goods and services remain unchanged, some items may see slight changes in the applicable tax, depending on the category. Experts advise shoppers to check itemized bills carefully to understand the exact tax component, especially for high-value items or services like electronics, luxury goods, and dining at restaurants.

Consumers may notice that digital receipts now display breakdowns of tax components, including CGST, SGST, and IGST, making it easier to understand how much tax is being paid. For small businesses and kirana stores, GST 2.0 introduces simplified reporting formats and faster settlement of tax credits.

Economists believe that these reforms will streamline tax collection, enhance compliance, and ultimately benefit consumers by making the taxation process more transparent. Shoppers are advised to stay informed about these updates and maintain records of invoices, especially for high-value purchases, as the system continues to evolve.

In short, GST 2.0 doesn’t drastically change tax rates for most items but introduces digital compliance and transparency that will be reflected in your shopping bills starting today.

MPs and party workers will visit local markets across their constituencies until September 29. They will inform citizens about reduced GST rates and promote affordable products.

The initiative coincides with GST 2.0, which introduces a two-slab tax system. GST on over 375 daily-use items has been cut. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the campaign as a “festival of savings” for all Indians.

During the campaign, MPs and party workers will conduct daily padyatras in selected markets. They will greet shopkeepers with flowers and distribute placards promoting Swadeshi and Made-in-India products. The campaign also emphasizes supporting local businesses.

The outreach aims to help the poor, middle class, MSMEs, women, and youth by lowering household expenses. MPs will submit daily reports of their activities to central and state offices. The new GST rates will simplify compliance for businesses and make essential items more affordable nationwide.

The coming week is expected to be crucial for Indian equities as multiple domestic and global developments unfold. Investors are closely watching GST 2.0 implementation, H-1B visa fee hikes, and India-US trade talks. Foreign institutional investor (FII) activity will also guide market momentum.

From September 22, GST 2.0 will reduce the current four-rate structure to two slabs: 5 per cent and 18 per cent. Taxes on several goods have been cut, promising immediate relief for consumers. Market participants expect the reforms to boost business sentiment.

US President Donald Trump announced a sharp increase in the H-1B visa fee to $100,000. The fee will apply only to new visa applications. Any progress in India-US trade negotiations could further impact investor confidence, as a US delegation is currently in India.

The domestic market ended last week on a strong note. Nifty gained 0.85 per cent to 25,327.05, while Sensex rose 721.53 points to 82,626.23. Sectoral indices such as PSU banks, realty, energy, and services recorded healthy gains. FIIs sold equities worth Rs 1,327.38 crore, the lowest outflow in weeks, while DIIs bought Rs 11,177.37 crore.

India is set to roll out GST 2.0 luxury goods taxation from September 22, 2025, simplifying the system and reshaping how essentials and premium products are taxed. The new structure retains just two main slabs—5% and 18%—along with a new 40% rate on luxury and sin goods.

GST 2.0 Luxury Goods Under 40% Slab

One of the biggest changes is the creation of a 40% tax bracket. This will cover luxury cars, high-end motorcycles, aerated and caffeinated drinks, and other premium non-essential products. Tobacco items such as cigarettes and gutka will continue under the 28% slab with cess until loan obligations are cleared, after which they too may move into the new 40% category.

Impact of GST 2.0 on Essentials

For ordinary households, GST 2.0 luxury goods reform means essentials will become cheaper. Daily-use items like toothpaste, soaps, shampoos, and hair oil will fall under the 5% bracket, down from 12–18% earlier. Processed foods, chocolates, cooking oil, and certain medicines will also benefit. Some staples such as bread and paneer will even be exempt from GST.

Standard Goods at 18%

Products such as televisions, air conditioners, small cars, and two-wheelers will now attract 18% GST, reduced from the earlier 28% slab. This will likely encourage demand for consumer durables during the festive season, boosting retail and manufacturing sectors.

Relief and Broader Impact

A major relief for families comes with life and health insurance policies, which are now fully exempt from GST. The government hopes that GST 2.0 will not only improve affordability but also increase compliance for businesses. Analysts say the reform could trigger higher consumption, though it may cost the exchequer nearly ₹48,000 crore in lost revenue.

By simplifying the system and easing prices on essentials, while taxing luxury consumption higher, GST 2.0 luxury goods reform marks a significant step in India’s tax evolution.
