Honda Cars India has announced significant price reductions across its product portfolio, slashing sticker prices by as much as ₹95,500. The move comes in response to the latest changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework, which has lowered levies on certain automobile categories.

The company said the revised prices would immediately apply to popular models, making them more accessible to customers ahead of the festive season. According to Honda officials, the updated GST rates have created space for competitive pricing while also boosting demand in the passenger car segment.

Among the models benefiting from the reduction are the Honda City, Amaze, Elevate, and WR-V. Depending on the variant, customers can expect savings ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹95,500. Industry experts say this price correction could significantly improve Honda’s market share at a time when competition in the mid-size sedan and SUV segments is intensifying.

The announcement comes as automakers across India adjust their pricing strategies in light of the GST reforms, which aimed to streamline tax slabs and offer relief to both manufacturers and buyers. Analysts believe the reduction will not only enhance affordability but also stimulate sales volumes in the upcoming months.

Honda Cars India stated that it remains committed to providing value to customers while aligning with policy changes. Dealers across the country have already begun updating their price lists to reflect the new rates, with many reporting an uptick in inquiries from prospective buyers.

For the auto industry, the price cuts are expected to provide much-needed momentum, as companies eye higher sales during the festive quarter. Honda hopes the move will help it reinforce its position in India’s highly competitive passenger vehicle market.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said the government is preparing a support package for exporters hit by the 50 per cent US tariff. She explained that multiple ministries are in talks with industry bodies to assess losses and design targeted measures. “Something is being worked out to do some hand-holding for those exporters who have been affected,” Sitharaman told PTI.

The United States, India’s largest trading partner, imposed the tariffs in two stages last month, citing Russian crude imports and trade barriers. The steep duties have hit sectors like textiles, gems and jewellery, shrimp, leather, and footwear. Pharmaceuticals, energy, and electronics remain unaffected. With the US accounting for 20 per cent of India’s $437 billion exports, experts warn of serious risks to jobs and earnings. Chief Economic Adviser Anantha Nageswaran has warned that the tariffs could shave 0.5 per cent off GDP if not offset.

Alongside export relief, Sitharaman announced India’s biggest Goods and Services Tax reform since 2017. Effective September 22, essentials like bread, milk, and toiletries will attract a reduced 5 per cent GST, while most goods will face 18 per cent. Luxury and sin goods will move to a new 40 per cent slab.

The Finance Minister said the GST overhaul would ease household expenses and encourage consumption. Analysts believe that a mix of tariff relief for exporters and domestic tax reforms will help India withstand external shocks while boosting internal demand.

Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram criticized the GST reform, questioning the government’s delay in rationalizing tax slabs. He welcomed the reduction of rates but asked why it took eight years to correct the structure.

Chidambaram stated that GST reform should have been logical from the start in 2017. He said repeated appeals from the opposition were ignored. According to him, the timing of the move could be linked to slowing growth, rising household debt, shrinking savings, upcoming Bihar elections, or even trade war fears with former US President Donald Trump.

On the other hand, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently announced major GST changes at the 56th Council meeting. From September 22, the four-tier GST system will be replaced with two slabs — 5% and 18%. This comes just ahead of Navratri.

As part of the new GST reform, essential items like soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, and talcum powder will now fall under the 5% slab instead of 18%. Everyday goods such as bicycles, utensils, and milk bottles will also become cheaper. Basic food items, life-saving cancer drugs, and health insurance will be fully exempt from GST.
