Guwahati News: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday laid the foundation for development projects worth ₹272 crore. The initiatives aim to strengthen infrastructure and accelerate growth across the state. The foundation ceremony took place in Guwahati in the presence of local leaders and officials.

Addressing the gathering, Sarma said the projects align with the vision of making Assam a developed state by 2047. He stressed that strong infrastructure remains the backbone of economic progress. The projects focus on connectivity, health, education, and water supply.

A major highlight includes an ₹85 crore bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Majuli island. The bridge will reduce travel time and boost tourism. In Kamrup district, a ₹60 crore water supply project will address long-standing water shortages.

The government has also allocated ₹45 crore for education infrastructure. This includes new school buildings and digital laboratories in remote areas. Several rural health centres will receive upgrades to improve medical access.

Local residents welcomed the announcement. Many said the projects would create employment and improve living standards. Sarma stated that thousands of jobs would emerge during construction and operation phases.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the use of green energy and sustainable practices. He confirmed that work would begin immediately. The government aims to complete most projects within two years. Sarma said Assam’s development journey has entered a decisive phase.

The Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth ₹2.40 crore in a money laundering case linked to Oil India Limited. The action was carried out by the ED’s Guwahati Zonal Office under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

The attached properties belong to Karun Jyoti Barua, a former Superintending Engineer (Civil) at Oil India’s Duliajan unit. The seized assets include 67 LIC insurance policies valued at ₹1.96 crore. The attachment also covers a residential RCC house with a covered garage worth ₹43.99 lakh.

The case originates from an FIR filed by the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch in Guwahati. The CBI accused Barua of possessing assets far beyond his known income sources. Its charge sheet stated that Barua accumulated disproportionate assets worth ₹2.39 crore between April 2009 and March 2019.

ED investigators found that Barua invested illicit funds in his own name and in family members’ names. He allegedly purchased 44 LIC policies in cash. Investigators noted that his family income did not justify such investments. Barua also failed to explain several policy purchases made through banking channels.

The agency said Barua used the proceeds of crime to construct the residential property.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a strong public appeal on Shaheed Divas, urging citizens not to hire unknown individuals or sell land to outsiders. Speaking at the inauguration of the Assam Movement Martyrs’ Memorial in Guwahati’s Baragaon, he honoured those who sacrificed their lives during the 1979 Assam Movement against illegal Bangladeshi infiltration. Sarma emphasised that hiring unknown labourers or selling land to strangers could worsen infiltration and demographic imbalance in the state.

He reminded people that the memorial was first laid in 2019 and now stands as a tribute to thousands who joined the movement. Sarma clarified that his remarks were directed at illegal infiltrators, not against the Bengali community, countering recent TMC allegations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered the Assam Movement martyrs, reaffirming the commitment to protect Assam’s cultural identity and ensure long-term development.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a dedicated visa facilitation centre will soon be established in Guwahati to handle applications for over 60 countries. The initiative, in collaboration with VFS Global, aims to make visa processing more accessible for residents of Assam and the entire Northeast region.

Currently, residents of Assam often have to travel to cities like Delhi or Mumbai to submit biometric data for visas, leading to significant time and financial burdens. CM Sarma emphasized that the new Guwahati centre will reduce travel and simplify the application process, allowing applicants to complete necessary procedures locally.

While the full list of countries has not yet been disclosed, the centre is expected to cater to a wide range of nations, facilitating tourism, education, business, and other international engagements. Local stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, calling it a major step forward in improving access to global opportunities from the Northeast.

The centre is also expected to boost regional development by enhancing connectivity with countries worldwide. By streamlining visa services, Assam can promote international travel, trade, and cultural exchange, supporting both residents and businesses seeking global exposure.

Officials stated that more details, including the exact timeline for the centre’s opening and the complete list of countries covered, will be announced in the coming weeks. This initiative underscores the Assam government’s commitment to infrastructure development, citizen convenience, and global integration.

Once operational, the Guwahati visa facilitation centre will be a significant milestone for the region, strengthening Assam’s position as a hub for international travel and enhancing its connectivity with the world.

Speaking at the event, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh expressed pride in hosting such a grand show in Northeast India. He said the IAF had planned it for several years and postponed it from October to November to make it possible. Singh added that the huge public turnout showed the region’s growing national importance and public enthusiasm.

Highlighting the occasion’s significance, the Air Chief said the Northeast is no longer a distant or disconnected region. The IAF has held several air displays here before, but this was the first time Air Force Day celebrations took place in Guwahati — a historic milestone for the service.

The BCCI will pay tribute to late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 opening ceremony on September 30 in Guwahati. The event will precede the opening match between India and Sri Lanka.

Initially planned as a grand celebration, the ceremony has been scaled down following Garg’s passing in Singapore on September 19. A 40-minute musical tribute will feature performances by Papon, Joy Barua, Shreya Ghoshal, and the Shillong Choir.

This marks the first time Assam is hosting a World Cup match. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia urged people from Guwahati, the state, and the Northeast to attend and pay homage to the music icon. The stadium is expected to reach its full capacity of approximately 40,000 spectators.

With India playing on the opening day, security has been strengthened with multiple layers and traffic management strategies. The match coincides with Mahashtami during Durga Puja, so additional traffic restrictions will be enforced. India and Sri Lanka are jointly hosting the tournament, with matches also scheduled in Indore, Visakhapatnam, Navi Mumbai, and Colombo.
