Hockey India names Junior World Cup squad with 18 players who will compete in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10.

Coach PR Sreejesh selected a balanced group with strong experience from recent international matches. Defender and dragflicker Rohit will lead the team after a solid performance in the Sultan of Johor Cup, where India won silver. Goalkeepers Bikramjit Singh and Princedeep Singh strengthen the backline.

The defence features Amir Ali, Anmol Ekka, Talem Priyobarta, Sunil Bennur, and Shardanand Tiwari. In midfield, the team includes Ankit Pal, Adrohit Ekka, Thounaojam Luwang, Manmeet Singh, and Rosan Kujur. The forwardline is paced by Sourabh Anand Kushwaha, Arshdeep Singh, Ajeet Yadav, Dilraj Singh, and Gurjot, who already has senior team experience.

Coach Sreejesh said the selections focus on skill, physical strength, and the mental ability to handle pressure. He added that training alongside the senior team in Bengaluru boosted confidence.

India will miss talented forward Araijeet Singh Hundal due to a shoulder injury, but the squad remains confident and motivated for a strong campaign at home.

Hockey has always been a special sport for India. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team captain, Harmanpreet Singh, is regarded as one of the modern legends of the game. He draws inspiration from India’s historic 1948 London Olympics win, where the team defeated Great Britain 4-0 to claim the first gold medal as an independent nation.

Harmanpreet recalled, “Winning the gold in London was massive, especially defeating Great Britain on their turf. Listening to stories from our seniors about that day inspires me greatly as a player.” He has previously interacted with Balbir Singh Sr, a key member of the 1948 team, learning about their experiences and the roaring support of the British crowd.

At the 1948 Olympics, India defeated Austria, Argentina, Spain, and the Netherlands before winning against Great Britain. Harmanpreet emphasized that the team aims to reach higher at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, hoping to hear the National Anthem played for India once again.

“Hockey and India share a rich history. Our goal is to win the ninth Olympic gold. With our seniors’ blessings, we will give our best on the field,” Harmanpreet said. Hockey India plans to share more stories from legends to celebrate the sport’s century-long contribution to the country.

The Hockey India League (Hero HIL) Governing Council will run the UP Rudras franchise for the HIL 2026 season. This ensures Rudras players can compete and keeps the league balanced. The council will manage the team until a new owner joins. It is open to discussions with potential franchise buyers.

UP Rudras withdrew from the league due to financial issues. The franchise now focuses on strengthening hockey in India through school programs, community initiatives, and scouting young talent. It also aims to create platforms connecting local players to national-level opportunities.

The announcement came during the HIL 2026 Mini Auctions, featuring over 100 men’s and women’s players. Men’s teams have a salary cap of Rs 4 crore, and women’s teams Rs 2 crore. Each squad includes 20 players, with two goalkeepers, up to seven overseas recruits, and at least three Indian juniors to promote new talent.

The auctions have three base price levels — Rs 2 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh. Franchises can only bid if they have budget and open positions. This ensures balanced squads while providing fair opportunities for players and strengthening league competition.
