Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes young opener Abhishek Sharma has taken over the mantle of dominating the powerplay overs for India following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20 internationals. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif praised Abhishek’s fearless batting and said the left-hander is already proving himself as a genuine match-winner at the top of the order.

Kaif highlighted that India needed an aggressive striker to fill Rohit’s void, and Abhishek has answered that challenge with a series of explosive knocks in the Asia Cup 2025. “When Abhishek plays, he wins the game on his own. His range of strokes, power, and mindset make him a nightmare for bowlers. On his day, he can even smash six sixes in an over–it’s only a matter of time,” Kaif said.

The 25-year-old has been India’s standout performer in the tournament, leading the run charts with 173 runs in four innings at an average of 43.25 and an astonishing strike rate of 208.43. His consistency has also helped him retain the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings.

Abhishek’s recent knocks have underlined his big-match temperament. In India’s Super 4 clash against Bangladesh in Dubai on September 24, he blasted 75 runs off just 37 balls, reaching his half-century in only 25 deliveries. This came after a match-winning 74 against Pakistan in the first Super 4 game, marking his second consecutive score of 70-plus in the tournament.

With India set to face Pakistan for the third time in the Asia Cup final on September 28, fans are eager to see if Abhishek can once again dominate the powerplay and deliver another headline-grabbing performance for Suryakumar Yadav’s side.

Tensions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) have escalated, with sources suggesting that Team India may decline to accept the Asia Cup trophy directly from the ACC president if they win the tournament final.

The controversy stems from growing friction over scheduling, revenue sharing, and the ACC’s stance on venues for regional tournaments. India had earlier expressed concerns about playing matches in certain locations due to security and logistical issues, which reportedly led to differences with the ACC’s top leadership.

According to sources close to the BCCI, players and officials feel that accepting the trophy from the current ACC president would send the wrong message, given the strained relations. “India has always respected the spirit of the game, but recent decisions by the ACC have not been in sync with our expectations,” a senior cricket administrator said.

The matter is said to be under internal discussion within the BCCI. One of the options being considered is for the team captain to lift the trophy independently or receive it from neutral tournament officials rather than from the ACC president.

The speculation has added a layer of political drama to the Asia Cup final, already a high-stakes encounter for cricket fans across the continent. Analysts say that while the decision would be symbolic, it could further strain ties between India and the ACC, potentially influencing future hosting rights and bilateral relations.

For now, Indian cricket fans are focused on the final match, but whispers of a possible snub at the presentation ceremony are keeping the spotlight firmly on the off-field dynamics.

Shreyas Iyer leadership role after Asia Cup snub has given the star batter a renewed chance to showcase his abilities. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday that Iyer will captain India A in two multi-day matches against Australia A, a move that could shape his international future.

The decision comes shortly after Iyer’s unexpected exclusion from the Asia Cup squad, which sparked debates among fans and experts. Despite the disappointment, selectors have now recognized his leadership potential. As captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL, Iyer led from the front with more than 600 runs at a strike rate of 175, guiding the franchise to their first final in 11 years.

Reports also suggest that Iyer is in contention to take over as India’s next ODI captain after Rohit Sharma. While Shubman Gill is another name being considered, Iyer’s tactical sharpness and batting form make him a strong candidate.

In red-ball cricket, Iyer has been absent from the Test team since 2024. The India A assignment offers him a pathway back. If he delivers against Australia A, selectors may reward him with a recall for the upcoming West Indies and South Africa series. With Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair struggling in recent games, the door is open for Iyer’s return.

This leadership role is more than just a consolation after the Asia Cup snub. It provides Iyer with a platform to prove his consistency, regain trust, and strengthen his case as a leader for India across formats.
