India and South Korea have strengthened their strategic partnership, focusing on technology-driven collaboration in semiconductors and sustainable energy. This shift moves beyond traditional trade to address global supply chain challenges and geopolitical tensions.

The semiconductor partnership supports India’s ambition to become a global chip hub by 2030. India is building fabrication plants and supply chains, while South Korea, home to Samsung and SK Hynix, offers expertise, investment, and technology to boost the sector.

Collaborative R&D in AI chips, 3D packaging, and joint innovation hubs will reduce India’s reliance on China-centric supply chains. India plans to develop a skilled semiconductor workforce and support fabless design startups to integrate into the global value chain.

In energy, both countries focus on renewable solutions, green hydrogen, and battery storage to stabilize power grids. South Korea’s advanced technology complements India’s clean energy goals, enabling joint ventures, technology transfer, and accelerated sustainable growth.

Gourangalal Das, a senior diplomat, has been appointed as India’s new Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) made this announcement on Wednesday. Das, who is a 1999-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, currently serves as Joint Secretary in the MEA. He will soon take up his new assignment in Seoul.

The Indian Embassy in South Korea confirmed his appointment on X, stating, “Gourangalal Das appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea.” Das will replace Amit Kumar, the current Ambassador to South Korea.

Earlier this month, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun visited New Delhi and held talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Cho praised India’s transformation under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and shared his experiences during his tenure as Ambassador to India from 2015 to 2017.

India and South Korea established diplomatic relations in 1973, with consular ties in 1962. Both countries elevated their relationship to a “Strategic Partnership” in 2010, and further upgraded it to a “Special Strategic Partnership” during Modi’s visit to Seoul in 2015. In 2023, they marked 50 years of diplomatic relations with several events.
