The announcement followed a high-level stakeholder consultation titled “Stakeholders Consultation for Mizoram Ginger Produce”, organised jointly by the Mizoram government and NITI Aayog at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Monday. Over 60 participants from government departments, Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs), entrepreneurs, and industry representatives attended the session, focusing on strengthening value chains, improving processing facilities, and boosting market linkages for ginger.

Addressing the participants, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma highlighted that the state has emerged as a major ginger producer over the past two years, with produce recognised for its superior quality. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and investors, noting the provision of a Minimum Support Price of Rs 50 per kilogram. The Chief Minister also spoke on reforms in state industry and investment policies aimed at encouraging value-added agriculture and broader agribusiness opportunities.

NITI Aayog Member Dr V.K. Paul chaired the inaugural session and provided strategic guidance for strengthening the ginger value chain. Other key dignitaries included NITI Aayog Additional Secretary Rohit Kumar, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, Food Processing Industries Secretary A.P.
The consultation encouraged open discussions on expanding trade linkages, boosting processing and export potential, and creating a sustainable ecosystem for ginger farmers. Stakeholders also explored technological innovations in cultivation, organic certification standards, and financial support mechanisms to benefit small-scale producers.

The state government announced the “Ginger Buyer–Seller Meet” in Aizawl on December 5–6 to further facilitate business collaborations and market linkages. With coordinated efforts from the state government, NITI Aayog, and industry stakeholders, Mizoram’s ginger sector is poised to achieve national and international recognition, improving farmer incomes, creating employment, and strengthening the state’s agricultural exports.

Amid growing trade tensions, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick issued a sharp warning to India over its tariff policies. Speaking at a recent event, he said that unless India reduces its tariffs, trade relations with the United States could face serious challenges.

Lutnick questioned why a country of 1.4 billion people proudly boasts of its size but refuses to purchase even a bushel of American corn. He expressed surprise that India exports a wide range of products to the United States yet restricts American agricultural imports.

He argued that India continues to impose tariffs on almost everything while simultaneously benefitting from access to U.S. markets. Stressing former President Donald Trump’s stance, he said that America only seeks fair and reciprocal trade. Lutnick added that the U.S. will respond to India in the same way India treats it.

Highlighting that Washington has already imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods, Lutnick said this was part of efforts to correct long-standing imbalances in bilateral trade. His remarks underline the rising friction in Indo-U.S. trade ties, especially in agriculture and manufacturing.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said that the Indian economy remains strong, supported by steady rural demand, a good monsoon season, and falling inflation. In its latest bulletin, the central bank noted that retail inflation in July dropped to just 1.55%, the lowest in nearly eight years, and well below the 4% comfort level. Lower food prices and improved rural earnings have created positive conditions for consumption, giving policymakers some breathing space.

The RBI pointed out that demand for goods and services is holding firm, while coordinated fiscal and monetary measures are keeping growth on track. The outlook for agriculture also looks stable, thanks to timely rainfall and improved crop prospects.

However, the central bank also issued a warning. It said that rising US tariffs on Indian exports could become a major downside risk. Several sectors, including textiles, agriculture, and chemicals, may feel the pinch if American trade policies continue to tighten. This, the RBI cautioned, could reduce external demand and slow momentum in the coming months.

Despite the global headwinds, the RBI maintained that India’s growth prospects remain resilient. The bank assured that it is closely monitoring global uncertainties and stands ready to act if needed.
