Researchers at Nagaland University have developed a flexible supercapacitor device that could power next-generation wearables, electric vehicles, and renewable energy systems. The breakthrough aims to strengthen India’s clean energy future while reducing dependence on imported batteries. The project was supported by IISc Bangalore and funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF).

Unlike traditional batteries, the supercapacitor prototype has been successfully tested for practical use. It can be applied in health-monitoring devices, IoT gadgets, robotics, and electric mobility. According to the study, published in RSC Advances, such devices could enhance regenerative braking, support quick acceleration, and extend battery lifespan.

The device was developed at the AMDA Research Laboratory, Lumami campus, using cobalt-doped molybdenum diselenide. It combines flexibility, high energy density of 34.54 W h kg⁻¹, and stability across 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. Even after repeated bending and twisting, the performance remained intact. This advancement strengthens India’s path toward sustainable, self-reliant energy solutions under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Next steps will focus on improving electrode–electrolyte interfaces, using solid-state gel electrolytes, and scaling up for pilot production. Industry collaborations are also being explored to commercialize the technology.
