She praised the players for their determination and skill, saying they made the nation proud by lifting the trophy for the first time.

India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, in front of a packed crowd. All-rounder Deepti Sharma led the team’s victory with an outstanding all-round performance, scoring 58 runs and taking five wickets for 39. Her efforts ensured India posted a strong total of 298/7 in 50 overs.

South Africa’s chase ended at 246 in 45.3 overs, despite a valiant effort from captain Laura Wolvaardt. Key moments, like Tazmin Brits’ run-out by Amanjot Kaur, shifted the game in India’s favor. The Indian bowlers held their composure to secure a memorable win and clinch the nation’s maiden Women’s World Cup title.

With this triumph, India joined England and Australia as the only nations to win both men’s and women’s ODI World Cups. President Murmu said the victory would inspire generations of young women cricketers and elevate Indian women’s cricket to greater heights.

In a first-of-its-kind session, India’s men’s hockey team attended a chess masterclass at the SAI campus in Bengaluru. Former international chess player Prachura P Padakannaya guided the players on applying chess strategies to hockey. The aim was to improve decision-making, anticipation, and planning during matches.

Prachura compared chess phases to hockey gameplay. The opening represented a strong start, the middle game highlighted controlling the midfield, and the endgame focused on finishing moves. He used examples from India’s Tokyo Olympics Bronze-medal game to demonstrate precision and mental toughness.

Players explored chess pieces as hockey positions. Pawns symbolized defense, rooks and bishops created structure, knights represented unpredictability, and the queen embodied versatility. Players actively engaged and tried chess themselves, with Vivek Sagar Prasad and Captain Harmanpreet Singh participating first.

Coach Craig Fulton praised the initiative, noting it sharpened players’ thinking and strategy. Vivek and Harmanpreet shared that learning chess enhanced their approach to hockey. The session is expected to encourage future interdisciplinary learning, strengthening the team’s tactical and mental skills.

Hockey has always been a special sport for India. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team captain, Harmanpreet Singh, is regarded as one of the modern legends of the game. He draws inspiration from India’s historic 1948 London Olympics win, where the team defeated Great Britain 4-0 to claim the first gold medal as an independent nation.

Harmanpreet recalled, “Winning the gold in London was massive, especially defeating Great Britain on their turf. Listening to stories from our seniors about that day inspires me greatly as a player.” He has previously interacted with Balbir Singh Sr, a key member of the 1948 team, learning about their experiences and the roaring support of the British crowd.

At the 1948 Olympics, India defeated Austria, Argentina, Spain, and the Netherlands before winning against Great Britain. Harmanpreet emphasized that the team aims to reach higher at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, hoping to hear the National Anthem played for India once again.

“Hockey and India share a rich history. Our goal is to win the ninth Olympic gold. With our seniors’ blessings, we will give our best on the field,” Harmanpreet said. Hockey India plans to share more stories from legends to celebrate the sport’s century-long contribution to the country.

Despite the absence of Ashu Malik, young raider Akshit Dhull impressed with a Super 10, steering his team to another win over Gujarat.

Both teams started strongly with early points from Rakesh and Neeraj Narwal. Delhi’s Neeraj Narwal triggered the first All-Out of the game, giving his side a crucial four-point lead. The momentum shifted toward Delhi as Ajinkya Pawar and Surjeet Singh added valuable points. By halftime, Delhi led comfortably at 21-14.

In the second half, Gujarat Giants fought back through Himanshu Jaglan and Mohammadreza Shadloui, who completed their High Fives with strong tackles. Himanshu Singh’s all-round effort helped Gujarat level the score, but Delhi regained control with timely raids from Akshit Dhull and Neeraj Narwal.

In the closing minutes, Dhull’s Super Raid sealed the victory. His composure and attacking display earned Delhi their second win over Gujarat this season, keeping them firmly in contention for the top spot in the PKL table.

Tamil Thalaivas ended their home leg in style with a massive 56-37 victory over Patna Pirates in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 12 match at Chennai’s SDAT Indoor Stadium. Star raider Arjun Deshwal delivered a career-best performance, scoring 26 points, his highest ever in a single game. It was a special night for him as he achieved his 71st Super 10, moving up to third place in PKL history.

Nitesh Kumar supported him with a brilliant High Five, while Narender Kandola and Aashish added crucial points. The Thalaivas’ total of 56 points was the highest by any team this season. For Patna Pirates, Ayan Lohchab and Ankit Rana fought back with Super 10s, but their efforts could not change the result.

Early in the match, both teams traded blows with quick raids. However, the Thalaivas turned the game around after the first All Out, gaining a strong 30-19 lead by halftime. Arjun’s attacking rhythm and Nitesh’s tackles gave the hosts total control.

In the second half, despite a late Super Raid by Ayan Lohchab, the Thalaivas remained dominant. Arjun sealed the match with his record-breaking 26 points, leading Tamil Thalaivas to a 19-point win and a memorable home finish.
