Amit Shah on Assam History drew attention on Sunday as the Union Home Minister credited Gopinath Bordoloi for keeping Assam within India. Shah made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Batadrava, Assam.

The Home Minister attended the inauguration of the Srimanta Sankardeva Avirbhav Kshetra in Nagaon district. He paid tribute to Srimanta Sankardeva and praised his role in strengthening India’s cultural roots through devotion.

Shah said Sankardeva was not only a saint but also a social reformer. He united Assam and the Northeast through spiritual and cultural values. The Bhakti movement, he added, continues to inspire social harmony today.

During his address, Shah also remembered Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi. He stated that Assam would not have remained part of India without Bordoloi’s efforts. Shah said Bordoloi compelled then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to ensure Assam’s integration with India.

The Home Minister described Bordoloi’s role as historic and decisive. He said Assam’s strong connection with India exists because of Bordoloi’s leadership and resolve.

Speaking on the Batadrava redevelopment project, Shah said the initiative would strengthen Assam’s cultural identity. He added that such projects help future generations stay connected to their heritage.

Shah reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to preserving and promoting Northeast India’s cultural legacy.
