According to the National Center for Seismology, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Dima Hasao district at around 9:04 pm. The epicentre was located five kilometres below the surface, which made the tremors clearly noticeable.

Earlier in the evening, another earthquake hit Ladakh’s Leh region at 7:35 pm. Officials recorded its magnitude at 3.7 on the Richter scale. The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Seismic activity was not limited to India. A 3.4-magnitude earthquake was reported in Tibet at around 3:26 pm. Scientists said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. Experts noted that the Himalayan belt remains highly seismically active.

Japan also witnessed strong tremors hours before the New Year. The United States Geological Survey reported a 6.0-magnitude earthquake near Noda city on December 31. The epicentre lay about 91 kilometres east of the city at a depth of 19.3 kilometres.

Authorities confirmed no reports of casualties or damage. However, the tremors created fear among people across affected regions.
