A deadly landslide in Indonesia’s Central Java province has claimed six lives, while 17 people remain missing, authorities reported on Saturday. The disaster struck on Thursday in Cibeunying village, located in the city of Cilacap, following days of heavy, continuous rainfall.

According to Budi Irawan, deputy at Indonesia’s disaster management agency, rescuers have recovered three additional bodies, bringing the confirmed death toll to six. The search continues for 17 residents still trapped beneath debris, with some victims buried between 3 to 8 metres deep, making rescue operations extremely challenging.

“Rescuers are working tirelessly under difficult conditions to locate and recover the missing,” Budi said. The landslide buried several homes, leaving the local community in shock and prompting emergency response teams to act quickly.

Central Java frequently faces landslides and floods during Indonesia’s wet season, which runs from September to April. The region is prone to extreme rainfall, increasing the risk of natural disasters. In January, heavy rains triggered a landslide in Pekalongan, another city in Central Java, killing at least 25 people.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow evacuation orders when necessary. Emergency teams continue to comb the affected area for survivors, while local authorities coordinate relief and support for displaced families.

The latest landslide highlights the ongoing threat of natural disasters in Indonesia, particularly during the monsoon season, and underscores the importance of preparedness and timely emergency response.

The Rs 58 crore digital arrest scam has revealed a massive global cyber network with links to China, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. The Maharashtra Cyber Department discovered the connection while investigating one of India’s biggest cyber frauds, where scammers duped a Mumbai businessman by posing as CBI and ED officials.

The fraudsters contacted the businessman between August 19 and October 8, forcing him to join a fake video inquiry and transferring Rs 58 crore from his accounts. Officials said the gang routed the stolen money abroad through multiple cryptocurrency wallets and commission-based bank accounts.

The Rs 58 crore digital arrest scam is part of a wider cybercrime trend targeting Indians through fear and fake law enforcement identities. Investigators believe such scams may have generated more than Rs 2,000 crore across India.

Cyber experts warn that “digital arrest” crimes are rising fast. Scammers use video calls to trap victims, claim to be police or agency officers, and pressure them to pay. Maharashtra Cyber has intensified efforts to trace the international syndicate and strengthen online safety measures.
