Apple’s newly launched MagSafe Battery Pack designed for the ultra-thin iPhone Air has been opened up in teardowns, and the numbers have surprised many Apple fans.

The pack carries a 12.26 Wh battery, which translates to around 3,149 mAh. On paper, that’s roughly the same capacity as the iPhone Air’s own internal battery. What makes it even more interesting is that the cell is incredibly thin – just 2.72 mm – slim enough that it could technically fit inside the iPhone Air’s 5.6 mm frame.

Despite packing nearly the same battery power as the phone itself, the MagSafe accessory can only charge the handset up to about 65%. Analysts explain that this shortfall is due to the inefficiencies of wireless charging, where a significant portion of energy is lost during transfer between the pack and the phone.

The discovery highlights both the engineering trade-offs and Apple’s design strategy. By using a similar battery type in both the phone and the MagSafe pack, Apple may be streamlining production while keeping the accessory as thin as possible. However, for users, the expectation of a “full extra charge” isn’t being met.

While many expected the MagSafe unit to deliver almost double the phone’s backup, the reality shows that wireless charging still struggles with energy efficiency compared to wired solutions. The findings are likely to reignite debates on Apple’s focus on design elegance over practical performance in accessories.

For now, the iPhone Air MagSafe pack stands out for its sleek build and shared design DNA with the phone — but its charging limits may leave heavy users reaching for a wired power bank instead.

Apple’s latest flagship, the iPhone 17 series, officially went on sale in India on Friday, creating massive buzz across major cities. The launch drew huge crowds at Apple’s premium stores in Delhi (Saket) and Mumbai (Bandra Kurla Complex), where buyers queued up overnight to be among the first to purchase the new devices.

Many enthusiasts began lining up as early as the previous evening, some carrying chairs, snacks and even posters to showcase their excitement. “I’ve been waiting since 8 pm to buy the orange iPhone 17 Pro Max. This time the camera, battery, and design feel completely different,” said one customer outside the Mumbai store.

However, the high-energy atmosphere briefly turned chaotic when a scuffle broke out at the BKC store as the gates opened. Eyewitnesses said pushing and shoving between eager buyers led to a heated exchange before security personnel stepped in to restore order. No serious injuries were reported, but the incident highlighted the pressure on staff during such mega launches.

The pricing range for the iPhone 17 series in India starts at around ₹82,900 for the base model (256 GB) and goes up to ₹2,29,900 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max with 2 TB storage. Alongside the standard and Pro versions, Apple also unveiled the iPhone Air, offering lighter build and premium features.

Retailers across India, including Reliance Digital, Croma, Vijay Sales, Flipkart, and Amazon, reported brisk sales both online and offline. Promotional deals such as no-cost EMI, exchange offers, and bank card discounts further fueled demand.

While the day began with excitement and fanfare, the crowd-control issues in Mumbai underline the need for better management at high-profile tech launches. Despite the hiccup, the enthusiasm around Apple’s iPhone 17 suggests another record-breaking sales cycle for the company in India.
