Kolkata Metro services on the Blue Line were briefly disrupted on Tuesday after a passenger attempted suicide at Dumdum station, marking the third such incident in six days. The episode occurred at 11:31 am when the individual jumped onto the down-line tracks just as a train approached the platform. Metro authorities immediately imposed a power block to facilitate rescue operations, causing a 40-minute suspension of services between Dakshineswar and Sobhabazar on both up and down routes.

According to Metro officials, normal operations were restored at 12:11 pm, but the repeated incidents have raised concerns regarding commuter safety. This latest episode follows two earlier suicide attempts on the same corridor. On November 22, a middle-aged man jumped onto the tracks at MG Road station, disrupting services between Maidan and Dum Dum. Truncated services were run in segments until full operations resumed at 4:13 pm.

Two days before that, on November 20, another suicide attempt at Netaji station halted services for nearly an hour along the north–south alignment. All three incidents prompted emergency responses, temporary power cuts, and rescue efforts. Authorities are now under pressure to enhance platform monitoring and passenger safety measures across the network.

A 30-year-old Bhutanese man, Tilak Gurung, has survived what experts are calling one of the “rarest of the rare” medical events after undergoing a highly complex kidney transplant at Narayana Hospital, Kolkata. Both Tilak and his father—the donor—suffer from Factor VII deficiency, an exceptionally rare genetic bleeding disorder that makes major surgery extremely risky due to the high chance of uncontrolled bleeding.

Tilak had been struggling with persistently low haemoglobin levels, and investigations revealed kidney failure caused by the underlying disorder. As the family explored transplant options, multiple centres abroad reportedly declined the case, citing the high surgical risk for both donor and recipient. Tilak’s father, despite sharing the same disorder, insisted on donating his kidney.

The family eventually reached Narayana Hospital, where a multidisciplinary transplant team led by Dr Deepak Sekhar Roy decided to proceed after extensive planning, risk assessment, and counselling. Surgeons meticulously managed bleeding risks throughout the operation, making the procedure one of exceptional complexity.

The transplant was successful, and both Tilak and his father have recovered. The family publicly thanked the Bhutanese King for financial support and the medical team for saving Tilak’s life. Doctors say the

According to officials, thousands of homebuyers lost money to fraudulent projects and delayed construction. The CBI stated that it is not only targeting builders but also probing their nexus with officials in financial institutions who allegedly facilitated the scams.

The crackdown marks one of the largest actions against builder fraud in recent years. Investigators believe that the accused siphoned off funds meant for housing projects, leaving buyers in distress. Many victims have been waiting for years for possession of their homes.

The agency revealed that multiple shell companies and fake documents were allegedly used to mislead both investors and lenders. The probe aims to uncover how funds were diverted and who benefitted from the schemes.

Sourav Ganguly has been elected unopposed as CAB President, marking his return to cricket administration after six years. The former India captain took charge during the Cricket Association of Bengal’s 94th Annual General Meeting, replacing his brother Snehasish Ganguly, who stepped down after completing his tenure.

Ganguly previously served as CAB President from 2015 to 2019 before leading the BCCI. Now, with his unopposed election, he’s back to shape Bengal cricket’s future. His top priorities include expanding Eden Gardens’ capacity to 100,000 and securing marquee fixtures for the 2026 T20 World Cup. He also aims to revive Test cricket at Eden Gardens, starting with India’s clash against South Africa in November.

The elected unopposed as CAB President milestone reflects Ganguly’s continued influence in Indian cricket. He plans to launch a state-of-the-art academy in Dumurjala and strengthen Bengal’s first-class structure. Ganguly’s leadership team, including Bablu Kolay and Sanjay Das, was also elected unopposed.

With Eden Gardens poised for transformation and Bengal cricket set for a boost, Ganguly’s return promises exciting developments for fans and players alike.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Combined Commanders’ Conference (CCC) at the Eastern Command headquarters in Kolkata on Monday (September 15, 2025). The Combined Commanders’ Conference brings together the country’s top civil and military leadership to discuss national security priorities, strategic reforms, and operational preparedness.

The CCC serves as the apex brainstorming forum of the armed forces. This year’s edition holds special importance as it follows Operation Sindoor, which showcased joint planning and coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Moreover, the 2025 meet focuses on reforms, transformation, change, and preparedness under the theme “Year of Reforms — Transforming for the Future.”

For three days, service chiefs and senior commanders will interact with political leaders to chart out reforms in command structures, adopt faster decision-making, and strengthen cooperation across services. In addition, discussions will highlight institutional reforms, deeper integration, and modernisation of combat capabilities. Leaders also aim to sustain a high level of multi-domain readiness to tackle future threats.

Furthermore, cyber warfare, space-based assets, and artificial intelligence stand high on the agenda. The armed forces intend to embrace emerging technologies that enhance both offensive and defensive operations. Therefore, the conference provides a unique platform for decision-makers to brainstorm on these fast-evolving challenges in a joint environment.

PM Modi arrived in Kolkata on Sunday evening after completing his tour of Assam. On Monday morning, he addressed the commanders before leaving for Purnea in Bihar. Meanwhile, senior officials continued discussions in closed-door sessions. The last CCC took place in Bhopal in 2023, where leaders emphasized jointness and future-ready structures.

Ultimately, the Kolkata meet reflects India’s strategic vision for defence transformation. By focusing on innovation, integration, and readiness, the armed forces aim to remain agile, modern, and fully prepared to secure the nation in the coming decades.
