The Telangana High Court imposed a ₹50,000 fine on HYDRA Commissioner Ranganath for failing to submit a counter affidavit on time in a case before the court. The decision has drawn attention across administrative and political circles in Telangana.

The court expressed strong displeasure over the delay and stated that HYDRA Commissioner Ranganath repeatedly sought additional time instead of responding as directed. Judges observed that government officials must respect court orders and avoid unnecessary delays in legal proceedings.

During the hearing, the High Court criticized the practice of seeking repeated extensions and stressed the importance of accountability from senior officials holding responsible positions.

The court also directed Ranganath to immediately deposit the ₹50,000 penalty amount into the Chief Justice Relief Fund. The ruling has become a major talking point among bureaucrats and government departments.

Ranganath has been in the spotlight for HYDRA’s efforts to protect lakes and remove illegal constructions across Hyderabad. However, this latest court order has shifted attention to his handling of legal matters before the judiciary.

A bench led by Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan refused to interfere with the conviction of the accused. The Supreme Court on dowry harassment said society must stop treating brides and their families with disrespect.

The case involved a woman who died by suicide within three years of her marriage in 2010. Prosecutors said her husband and in-laws repeatedly demanded cash and a car as dowry. Both the trial court and the Chhattisgarh High Court found the accused guilty.

Justice Nagarathna asked, “Why do boys marry girls and then insult them and their families?” The court stressed that such behavior has no place in society. The judges also highlighted the financial and emotional pressure faced by many brides and their parents.

The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal and upheld the convictions, sending a strong message against dowry harassment across the country.

The Tripura High Court directed a woman to remain standing in the courtroom until the end of the day as a penalty in a contempt of court case. The order was passed by a division bench comprising Justices T. Amarnath Goud and Biswajit Palit during proceedings linked to a long-standing family dispute.

The contempt proceedings arose after the woman failed to comply with a divorce settlement. Under the agreement, she had promised to transfer certain properties to her two daughters through gift deeds. In exchange, her former husband was to provide her a new flat and increase her monthly maintenance.

Her ex-husband filed a petition claiming she had not fulfilled the property transfer as agreed. Instead, she held a press conference and publicly criticised two judges who had earlier handled the case. She also issued a signed press release repeating these accusations.

The bench expressed serious concern over her conduct. The judges reminded her that disputes over court orders must be addressed legally, not through media statements. They emphasized that public accusations against judges are not acceptable and cannot replace proper legal procedures.

As a consequence, the court ordered that she must stand in the courtroom until it adjourns for the day. The bench noted that this measure was non-punitive and accounted for her gender, aiming to correct behaviour without resorting to harsher punishments.

The case demonstrates how courts can use creative, non-custodial methods in contempt proceedings when a litigant disregards orders and makes public allegations. Her lawyer stated that she has agreed to apologise unconditionally and cooperate to complete the property transfer.

This unusual order has drawn attention across the legal community and the public, highlighting the seriousness with which courts treat contempt and the importance of following judicial directives.

The Calcutta High Court has stayed the cancellation of 313 teaching appointments in schools run by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. The interim relief was granted on Wednesday by a division bench for a period of 12 weeks.

Earlier, on December 17, a single-judge bench of Justice Biswajit Basu had cancelled the appointments. The court held that the teachers were recruited illegally in GTA-run schools across Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong.

Challenging that decision, the GTA moved the division bench comprising Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury. The matter was heard at the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench.

While granting the stay, the division bench noted that the single-judge order did not adequately consider key circumstances. The court observed that many teachers had served for long periods. It also noted that regular recruitment remained stalled for years due to prolonged political unrest in the hill regions.

The case stems from allegations that appointments were made without official notifications and outside established recruitment procedures. Earlier, the single-judge bench had ordered a CBI investigation into the matter.

That probe order was later modified after the Supreme Court ruled that the state CID would conduct the investigation instead. The main case on alleged irregular appointments remains pending before the High Court.

The Tripura High Court has ruled that state tax authorities cannot bring back powers that belonged to the repealed VAT regime, nor can they retain deposits collected under old VAT rules, once the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system has come into force. The court said such actions have no legal backing and violate the principles of natural justice.

The judgment came after a taxpayer challenged show-cause notices issued under the Tripura Value Added Tax (TVAT) Act, which had ceased to operate following the rollout of GST in 2017. Despite the law being repealed, authorities initiated proceedings almost nine years later, leading the court to call the move “arbitrary and unsustainable.”

The bench noted that deposits taken at the time of registration under the VAT regime were meant for compliance under a law that no longer exists. Therefore, the State cannot hold them indefinitely. Once the VAT system was replaced by GST, those deposits rightly belong to the taxpayers, the court said, directing the authorities to return the money without delay.

The ruling reinforces earlier legal interpretations from the Supreme Court, which has repeatedly clarified that states cannot amend, revive, or use VAT powers after GST came into effect. Any tax action must derive authority from a valid, existing statute—not one that has been abolished.

Legal experts say the Tripura judgment strengthens taxpayer rights and prevents misuse of outdated laws for revenue recovery. It also provides relief to businesses that still had deposits stuck under the old VAT system.

With this order, taxpayers in Tripura can now seek a refund of their VAT-era deposits and challenge any delayed or revival-based notices issued without lawful authority.

The victim’s brother stated that the harassment is linked to the Maulana’s interest in another woman.

The wife approached the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Chhatarpur after previous complaints in Tikamgarh went unaddressed.

Under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, triple talaq—whether oral, written, or electronic—is illegal and punishable by up to 3 years in prison. This incident highlights ongoing enforcement challenges despite the law.

Rabri Devi has filed a Rabri Devi Delhi court appeal seeking a new judge for the cases linked to her family. She told the Delhi court that she fears unfair treatment in the IRCTC scam and land-for-job scam cases. She repeated her concern many times in the petition, making the Rabri Devi Delhi court appeal a major political and legal development.

Rabri Devi asked the Principal District Judge of Rouse Avenue Court to move her cases away from Judge Vishal Gogne. She said she worries that the current judge supports the prosecution. She also said that recent orders increased her doubt about getting a fair hearing.

Four cases connected to Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi, and Tejashwi Yadav are going on in the same court. Charges were framed in October. Rabri Devi stated that these decisions strengthened her fear of bias. She asked for a transfer so another judge could review the matter with full fairness.

Her lawyer, Maninder Singh, informed the court that the plea needs quick hearing. The IRCTC case accuses Lalu Yadav’s family of taking land in return for railway posts. The Enforcement Directorate is also investigating related land-for-job deals.
