The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) inked the pact in New Delhi. The projects include 400 kV transmission lines connecting Inaruwa–Purnia and Lamki–Bareilly, aimed at improving energy exchange and grid reliability. The lines will be financed through 80% debt and 20% equity, shared between NEA and Power Grid.

Energy Minister Kulman Ghising said the projects will boost Nepal’s electricity exports to India and beyond. India’s Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar noted the initiative will strengthen regional energy security and economic growth. Each country will build its respective sections through joint venture firms.

Currently, the Dhalkebar–Muzaffarpur line is the only operational 400 kV link between the two nations. With India agreeing to buy 10,000 MW from Nepal over the next decade, the new transmission lines will be vital to achieving this target.

The visit will also include discussions with Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during the 5th India-Australia Energy Dialogue. The meetings aim to strengthen collaboration in areas such as solar PV, green hydrogen, and energy storage. Both countries will explore two-way investments and skill development for the renewable workforce.

This follows the second India-Australia Annual Summit held in November 2024 on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese had expressed their ambition to accelerate climate action through joint projects and the launch of the India-Australia Renewable Energy Partnership.

After India, Bowen will travel to China to meet Minister Huang Runqiu for the 9th Australia-China Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Change in Beijing. These diplomatic engagements are part of Australia’s broader effort to strengthen international climate collaboration and renewable energy initiatives.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar at the inaugural function. The talks emphasized sharing best practices and expertise in tackling climate-related challenges.

KwaZulu-Natal, which includes Durban, has been the hardest hit by climate change among South Africa’s nine provinces. The region faces recurring floods, coastal erosion, and infrastructure vulnerability. Kerala, with its experience in flood management and sustainable urban planning, will collaborate with KwaZulu-Natal to develop climate-resilient projects.

Officials said the pact will cover knowledge exchange, technical training, and joint planning of urban infrastructure projects. The partnership is expected to strengthen ties between India and South Africa while promoting sustainable development in both regions.
