Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India’s rapid economic growth is strongly tied to its energy and shipping sectors. Speaking at India Maritime Week 2025, he highlighted that nearly half of India’s $4.3 trillion GDP comes from external trade, making shipping vital for national progress.

Puri said India currently consumes 5.6 million barrels of crude oil per day and will soon reach 6 million barrels. The International Energy Agency estimates India will drive 30% of the global rise in energy demand over the next two decades. This will increase the country’s shipping needs for oil and gas transport.

During 2024-25, India imported 300 million metric tonnes of crude and exported 65 million tonnes. About 88% of crude and 51% of gas needs come from imports. Puri urged for stronger Indian ship ownership since only 20% of trade cargo moves on India-flagged vessels.

The minister said the government is promoting domestic shipbuilding, vessel financing, and cargo aggregation for PSUs. He noted that port capacity has nearly doubled since 2014, reflecting India’s vision to build a self-reliant maritime economy.

Union Cabinet approves ₹69,725 crore package for shipbuilding sector to boost domestic manufacturing, enhance export capacity, and strengthen maritime infrastructure.

The package will support shipbuilding firms through incentives, capacity building, and technology upgrades. Officials said the move aims to make India a global hub for ship manufacturing. It includes plans for modern shipyards, new vessel production, and skilled workforce development.

The government noted that the package will enhance strategic capabilities and strengthen the nation’s coastal economy. Union Cabinet approval reflects the commitment to self-reliance in defence and commercial shipping. The initiative also aligns with India’s vision to increase cargo handling and promote green shipping technologies.

Maritime industry leaders welcomed the decision, calling it a landmark step for the sector. They said it will boost competitiveness, generate jobs, and reduce dependence on foreign shipbuilders. The package will also strengthen India’s position in the global maritime supply chain.

With this decision, the government hopes to transform the shipbuilding-maritime sector into a key driver of economic growth and strategic strength for India.

Gujarat handles 49 per cent of total national cargo, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said while praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maritime vision. He explained that Gujarat has become the backbone of India’s port-led growth and continues to play a vital role in global trade.

Patel emphasized that Gujarat handles 49 per cent of total national cargo, which shows the strategic importance of the state’s coastline. With modern ports, digital systems, and better connectivity, Gujarat has established itself as the country’s leading maritime hub.

He noted that this achievement is not accidental. It is the result of consistent policies introduced during Modi’s tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister and later as India’s Prime Minister. Programmes such as Sagarmala and heavy investments in port infrastructure have accelerated this growth. Moreover, automation and technology upgrades have boosted efficiency.

According to Patel, Gujarat’s cargo growth also benefits people living in coastal areas. It creates large-scale employment, supports small businesses, and increases export potential. In addition, foreign investors trust Gujarat’s ports because of their efficiency and reliability.

Patel highlighted that Gujarat manages a diverse mix of cargo, including petroleum, textiles, chemicals, automobiles, and agricultural products. This diversity keeps trade flows stable and strengthens India’s overall economy. Furthermore, Gujarat’s performance adds credibility to India as a trusted global trade partner.

Concluding his remarks, Patel said that Gujarat’s achievements prove the strength of Modi’s maritime vision. He expressed confidence that Gujarat will remain India’s leader in cargo handling and continue to attract global shipping partnerships.
