Foreign investors’ net investment in South Korean stocks reached its highest level in over 18 months in September. Offshore investors purchased $4.34 billion worth of local stocks, marking the largest inflow since February 2024. The increase reflects optimism about improved conditions in the semiconductor industry.

Foreign investors also boosted their holdings in Korean bonds, buying $4.78 billion in September. This followed net selling of $770 million in August. The Bank of Korea noted that bond purchases were driven by rising demand for mid- to long-term securities.

The semiconductor sector led gains, with the Korea Exchange’s semiconductor index rising 26.8 percent in September. The benchmark KOSPI index also climbed nine percent during the month. Meanwhile, the Korean won weakened against the US dollar, dropping from 1,390.1 in August to 1,402.9 in September.

Investors from the United States were the largest buyers last month, net purchasing 1.4 trillion won, followed by Ireland with 0.4 trillion won. Foreign investment in Korean stocks has now seen four consecutive months of net inflows, reflecting strong performance and positive market sentiment.

South Korea’s IPO market rose 19% in the first nine months of 2025 compared to last year. Companies raised 3.41 trillion won ($2.43 billion), up from 2.85 trillion won, according to IR Kudos Corp.

A total of 55 companies went public on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets, compared with 47 last year. LG CNS Co., an IT affiliate of LG Electronics, raised 1.19 trillion won, the highest amount. DH Shipbuilding Co. followed with 500 billion won, and Seoul Guarantee Insurance raised 182 billion won.

The consulting firm expects IPOs to grow further for the rest of 2025. The KOSPI index has surged more than 43% this year, boosting investor interest and IPO activity.

From next year, regulators will implement stricter rules for IPOs. Over 40% of shares must go to institutional investors, who must hold them for three to six months. Currently, only 20% of shares are allocated this way. The change aims to prevent short-term profit-taking by institutional investors and ensure smoother market stability.

SBI Chairman CS Setty said India needs a strong financial system to achieve Viksit Bharat by 2047. He highlighted the need to deepen capital markets, foster innovation, and develop skilled financial talent. Setty added that SBI will actively support India’s financial growth alongside capital market participants.

Setty praised SBI’s fast responses and high-quality services, which capital market leaders widely appreciated. He said the bank will not only provide banking solutions but also help shape India’s financial future.

SBI reported a 12.5% rise in net profit to Rs 19,160 crore for Q1 FY26, compared to Rs 17,035 crore last year. Operating profit grew 15.5% to Rs 30,544 crore. Investor confidence improved as BSE-listed companies reached a combined value of Rs 465 lakh crore, near last year’s peak.

The Reserve Bank of India’s potential easing and softening inflation supported market optimism. Strong performances from PSU, auto, bank, metal, and oil & gas sectors further boosted markets. Experts predict corporate earnings may grow above 15% in FY27 due to GST reforms, improving foreign investor sentiment.
