Maternal deaths in Telugu states show a mixed picture even as India records a steady decline. The latest data from the Registrar General of India shows the national maternal mortality ratio dropped to 88 deaths per one lakh live births, down from 93 earlier. Health officials credit improved hospital deliveries and government health schemes for this progress.

However, the situation in maternal deaths in Telugu states is not uniform. Andhra Pradesh has shown strong improvement. Its maternal mortality ratio fell from 46 in 2019–21 to 30 in 2021–23, placing the state among the best performers in the country.

In contrast, Telangana recorded a worrying rise. The state’s maternal mortality ratio increased from 45 in 2019–21 to 59 in 2021–23. Health experts say the increase highlights gaps in maternal healthcare services.

Across southern states, Kerala recorded an MMR of 30, Tamil Nadu 35, and Karnataka 68. Meanwhile, states such as Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh continue to report higher maternal deaths in the country.

Maternal death refers to the death of a woman during pregnancy or within 42 days after delivery due to pregnancy-related complications. Experts say better antenatal care, skilled medical staff, and hospital deliveries can further reduce maternal deaths.
