Nursing unions point out that governments promised this directorate several times in the undivided state and again after Telangana’s formation. Former Health Minister Laxma Reddy also assured the Assembly that the government would create it. Moreover, current Health Minister Damodar Raja Narsimha secured cabinet approval for the plan. Even so, union leaders say official negligence has stalled the file. They now demand firm action and immediate execution of the directorate.

The government earlier announced that it would soon release guidelines on structure, staffing and operations. Yet unions report that repeated visits to the Secretariat and various health offices brought no response. Consequently, they want the minister to intervene and act against the officer responsible for the delay. They describe the inaction as disrespect to the cabinet’s decision.

Unions further argue that the directorate could finally address long-standing issues such as promotions, vacancies, transfers, deputations and service disputes. Today, more than 20,000 nursing employees work across multiple departments, and unions also allege corruption and file blocking under the current administration. Therefore, they believe the directorate would improve transparency and speed up solutions.

During discussions with the doctors’ representatives, Gaur also confirmed that the government is ready to resolve issues related to tribal allowances and other pending benefits.

However, when the doctors’ association requested a 15% in-service PG quota for the next three years, the secretary clarified that a final decision on that proposal would be taken in November.

The government emphasized that essential health services must not be disrupted and urged doctors to resume duties immediately in the interest of public welfare.

The scheme offers health coverage of Rs. 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation to about 55 crore beneficiaries. Currently, 12.37 crore families from India’s bottom 40 per cent population are covered under the programme.

Till June, more than 9.84 crore hospital admissions worth over Rs. 1.40 lakh crore have been authorised. A total of 31,466 hospitals have been empanelled, including 14,194 private hospitals. Over 41 crore Ayushman Cards have been issued nationwide.

Nadda highlighted that the initiative has reduced out-of-pocket expenses, strengthened social security, and provided dignified access to healthcare. He emphasised that Ayushman Bharat reflects PM Narendra Modi’s vision and the government’s commitment to building a healthier India, ensuring no citizen is left behind, regardless of income or geography.
