Telangana Steps Up Dam Safety After Centre’s Advisory

The Telangana government has launched major efforts to improve dam safety across the state. Union Minister C.R. Patil recently wrote to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, urging strict monitoring of all 173 dams. He asked the state to complete the Comprehensive Dam Safety Evaluation (CDSE) within 15 months and suggested seeking help from the National Dam Safety Authority if needed.

In response, the irrigation department listed all dams notified under the Dam Safety Act 2021. The Centre reminded the state that the first CDSE for each dam must be finished within five years of the Act’s implementation. Telangana’s deadline is December 2026. Taking the matter seriously, the Chief Minister held a review meeting with top irrigation officials.

He directed officials to prepare detailed status reports for all major and minor dams. Based on these reports, the government will hold another review meeting in the second week of November to finalize further action plans.

Union Minister Patil also named key projects under the Act, including Medigadda, Mid Manair, Lakshmi Sagar, Ramappa Lake, Dindi, and Gandipalem. The government will give special attention to dams such as Himayatsagar, Usmansagar, and Manjeera for close monitoring.

The Telangana Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, is scheduled to meet tomorrow at 3 PM to discuss several key state issues. The agenda includes deliberations on BC reservations, local body elections, the Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion, paddy procurement, the Musi River development project, T-Fiber network expansion, and the proposed Future City initiative.

Sources indicate that the Cabinet may also review progress on Medigadda project restoration works, the construction of the Sammakka-Saralamma barrage, and the Thummidihatti project. These discussions are expected to shape major decisions on infrastructure, social justice, and urban development.

The meeting comes at a crucial time as the government focuses on accelerating welfare programs and completing pending irrigation and urban infrastructure projects across Telangana.

MLA Prashanth Reddy has hailed the Kaleshwaram project as a key initiative that has helped Telangana overcome severe drought conditions. Speaking at the BRSSLP office , he stated that despite criticism from all political parties including the Chief Minister , Congress, and BJP the project continues to benefit farmers and the state .

Reddy highlighted that even after the Congress assumed power, nearly 20 lakh acres received irrigation through Kaleshwaram , ensuring agricultural stability. He emphasized the resilience of the * Medigadda * , which withstood heavy floods , demonstrating the project’s robust engineering and long-term benefits for water management.

The MLA invited critics to personally visit the site to witness the impact of the project firsthand . He stressed that Kaleshwaram is not just a water project but a lifeline for farmers , capable of mitigating droughts and supporting sustainable agriculture across Telangana.
