The approval removes a major legal hurdle and allows the court to begin formal proceedings against the suspended IPS officer.

The sanction came under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, following a review of the investigation conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation’s anti-corruption branch in Chandigarh. The Ministry examined the case records and sought the opinion of the Central Vigilance Commission. After reviewing the material, the commission recommended prosecution, stating that sufficient evidence pointed to a prima facie offence.

Investigators have accused Bhullar, a 2009-batch Punjab-cadre officer, of offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act and provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Officials believe the case holds enough merit to proceed in court.

Punjab DIG faces trial at a crucial moment as the CBI has also submitted a supplementary chargesheet before the Special CBI Court in Chandigarh. The court has listed the matter for further hearing on February 21, marking the next step in the legal process.
