Under the impact of Cyclone Montha, Nellore district experienced widespread rainfall on Monday. According to the Meteorological Department, the district recorded an average rainfall of 3.7 mm across 38 mandals. Podalakur in Sarvepalli constituency reported the highest rainfall of 16.6 mm, while Ananthasagaram in Atmakur registered just 1 mm.

Weather conditions changed drastically after 2 p.m., as skies turned cloudy and strong winds hit the coastal areas. The sea at Mypadu, Krishnapatnam, Ramayapatnam, Chennarayunipalem, and Ramatheerdham became rough with high tides. With a red alert in place, officials began relocating residents to 144 rehabilitation centres across the district to ensure safety.

To maintain communication, a special cell tower was installed at the Collectorate. Meanwhile, the Somasila reservoir neared 78 TMCft of its full capacity due to heavy inflows from Kurnool and YSR Kadapa. Officials released excess water into the Pennar river to prevent flooding in nearby villages.

District Special Officer Yuvaraj and Collector Himanshu Shukla reviewed the situation and instructed teams to remain alert. They directed forced evacuation from low-lying and coastal areas as a precautionary measure. Shukla assured that all rehabilitation centres are fully functional to face the cyclone’s impact.

Severe rains in Nepal and India have triggered floods and landslides, claiming more than 60 lives and leaving rescue teams struggling to reach isolated communities in mountainous areas.

Nepal has experienced torrential rainfall since Friday, causing rivers to overflow and inundating many settlements. Officials reported that at least 44 people have died and five are missing due to rain-related disasters. The eastern district of Illam was hit hardest, with 37 deaths caused by landslides, local authorities said.

“Heavy overnight rains caused landslides, blocking many roads and making rescue operations challenging,” said Sunita Nepal, a district official. Security forces have deployed helicopters and motorboats to aid affected communities, while residents along rivers in Kathmandu were evacuated to safer areas.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki assured that government agencies were “fully prepared for rescue and relief” and declared public holidays to prevent unnecessary travel.

Across the border in India, at least 20 people died in Darjeeling, West Bengal, after flash floods and landslides destroyed homes and infrastructure. Videos on Indian news channels showed rescue teams using cables to reach stranded residents. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the deaths and said the situation was being closely monitored.

India’s meteorological department issued a red alert for extreme rainfall in sub-Himalayan areas, including Darjeeling, until Monday. The Indian army also joined rescue operations in Bhutan, evacuating residents stranded in border towns such as Phuentsholing.

Experts warn that climate change is intensifying such disasters, increasing the frequency and severity of floods and landslides across South Asia. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development had warned this monsoon season of heightened disaster risks due to rising temperatures and extreme rainfall.

The Punjab monsoon withdrawal has stalled after retreating from southwestern Punjab and Haryana on September 15. Since then, the line of withdrawal has not moved. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on September 21 that it passes through Bathinda, Fatehabad, Pilani, Ajmer, Deesa, and Bhuj.

Normally, half of Punjab should have seen monsoon withdrawal by September 20, with complete withdrawal from Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh expected by September 25. Punjab experienced light to moderate rain with thunder in isolated areas over the past 24 hours. The weather is expected to remain dry until September 27. Some parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may see light rain.

IMD said the monsoon could withdraw from more areas in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir over the next two days. Experts say a western disturbance at 5.8 km altitude and a cyclonic circulation at 1.5 km over northwest Uttar Pradesh keep humidity high. These conditions delay the dry, high-pressure system needed for withdrawal.

Punjab received 621.7 mm of rain from June 1 to September 21, a 48% surplus over the 439.2 mm average. Himachal Pradesh and Haryana recorded surpluses of 45% and 38%, respectively. Last year, Punjab completed monsoon withdrawal by October 2, about a week late.

Punjab is facing a worsening flood situation as continuous heavy rainfall has caused rivers to swell and breach embankments, leaving several districts under water. The Ravi River has overflowed in Amritsar’s Ajnala subdivision, submerging more than 40 villages and affecting nearly 14,000 people. Vast stretches of farmland are under floodwaters, raising concerns of crop loss and long-term damage to livelihoods.

Rescue and relief operations have been intensified, with the Army, NDRF, and local police working together to evacuate stranded families. Relief camps have been set up in higher areas to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to those displaced. Officials said round-the-clock monitoring is underway to prevent further breaches of river embankments.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted an unusual spike in rainfall, with Punjab recording over 1,200 percent excess rain in a single day compared to seasonal averages. This sharp increase has worsened the flooding, causing road blockages, transport disruptions, and power outages in several regions.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid low-lying flood-prone areas, and cooperate with emergency teams. With rainfall expected to continue, the situation remains tense, and disaster management agencies are preparing for further challenges.

Punjab is facing a deepening flood crisis as heavy rains and overflowing rivers continue to disrupt life across several districts. Authorities have launched large-scale evacuation drives to move residents from low-lying and vulnerable areas to safer locations. Relief camps have been set up to provide shelter, food, and medical care for the affected families.

The state government has ordered the closure of schools in severely hit regions to ensure the safety of children. With roads submerged and electricity supply interrupted in many towns and villages, normal life has been thrown out of gear. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local administration, and volunteers, are working around the clock to relocate stranded people and deliver essential supplies.

Agriculture, the backbone of Punjab’s economy, has been hit hard. Thousands of acres of paddy fields are underwater, raising concerns of significant crop loss. Livestock has also been affected, adding to the distress of farmers. Health officials are warning about the risk of waterborne diseases spreading in flood-hit areas.

Chief Minister has appealed to citizens to remain calm and cooperate with authorities. He also urged the central government for urgent assistance to tackle the crisis and speed up relief efforts across the state.
