Around 400 farmers participated in large-scale cultivation, aided by modest financial support, machinery, and technical training. The Kohima District Agriculture Office supplied millet separation and de-husking mills, easing labour-intensive tasks that previously discouraged farming.

Millet farming had declined sharply by the 1980s as villagers shifted to paddy and vegetables. “Those who lacked rice land once depended on millets, but over time the crop fell out of favour,” said Kezoma Village Council Chairman Kikrosa Naki. Seed scarcity also posed challenges when the revival began.

A turning point came after villagers attended a millet awareness event at the Hornbill Festival in 2023. Motivated by the health and economic benefits highlighted by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the community collectively began restoring millet cultivation. This year’s first Millet Festival in Kezoma generated over ₹14 lakh in sales, with most produce sold out within hours.

Farmers say growing demand—especially among health-conscious consumers—has improved market prospects. However, they still face hurdles such as guarding fields from birds and building formal market linkages.

Despite challenges, the village has already sown a second batch for a late harvest. Agriculture officials expect the cultivated area to grow in coming years. By blending traditional wisdom with modern support, Kezoma is proving how an old grain can drive sustainable farming and strengthen food security in Nagaland.

India’s food security strategy focuses on increasing agricultural production and ensuring equitable distribution. Programs under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, and initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) provide affordable food grains to millions.

The government has strengthened production of wheat, pulses, milk, honey, fruits, and vegetables through schemes like the National Food Security Mission. Over the past decade, foodgrain output rose by 90 million metric tonnes, while fruit and vegetable output increased by over 64 million metric tonnes. India now ranks first globally in milk and millet production and second in fish, fruit, and vegetable production.

Other initiatives include the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC), PM POSHAN, Integrated Child Development Schemes, Rice Fortification, Direct Beneficiary Transfers, and the Open Market Sales Scheme. These programs reflect India’s ongoing commitment to eliminating hunger, malnutrition, and ensuring equitable access to nutritious food.
