During his leadership, Nitish Kumar focused on development, social justice, and welfare programs. Many of his schemes targeted OBCs, minorities, and weaker sections.

From 1989 onward, Nitish took oath as an MP several times—five times from Barh and once from Nalanda. During this period, he also took oath four times as a Union Minister. He served as Agriculture Minister, Railway Minister, and Road Transport Minister.

After 2005, when he became Bihar CM, Nitish chose the Legislative Council. He has been sworn in as an MLC four times—in 2006, 2012, 2018, and 2024. His current term as MLC runs until 2030.
