The debate over the 42 MBBS seats has created a major political storm in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah defended the Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence after 42 out of 50 MBBS seats went to Muslim students. He stated that the admissions were purely based on merit. Moreover, he said this result shows the government’s commitment to fairness in public institutions.

Abdullah also reminded critics that the medical university was created through an Act of the J&K Assembly. The law clearly rejects any religious discrimination. In addition, he explained that all admissions must follow NEET rankings and National Medical Council rules.

However, BJP leaders strongly opposed the admissions. They demanded a rollback, claiming that the college receives funds from Hindu devotees and should therefore prioritise Hindu students. They also met Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and submitted a memorandum asking for changes.

Officials responded by clarifying that the college is not a minority institution. Because of this, the rules must apply equally to all. Out of the 50 seats, 85% went to domicile candidates, but only eight Hindu students accepted their admission offers. Furthermore, Abdullah urged the BJP to revisit the Act instead of creating controversy.

He warned that linking religion with access to education could set a dangerous precedent. It could also affect governance and minority rights in the region in the future.

The NC Vows Fight For J&K Special Status and Statehood as party leaders promised an “unwavering commitment” to reclaiming Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and demanded immediate restoration of statehood.

The working committee passed seven resolutions that highlighted major political concerns. Leaders said the special status represents the dignity and aspirations of the people and must return without delay. The party also condemned the Delhi terror attack that killed at least 15 people and injured many others. Members expressed concern over the accidental blast at Nowgam police station, calling for a high-level investigation to fix responsibility.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke strongly about the need to restore statehood. He said elected governments handle security better and argued that incidents like the Delhi and Pahalgam attacks would not happen under full state control. Abdullah also raised concerns about interference in governance, pointing to issues at SKIMS, universities, and various state institutions that lack elected oversight.

He reminded the Centre of its promise to the Supreme Court: delimitation, elections, and then statehood. With two steps complete, he questioned why the final step faces delays.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accused the central government of failing to honor its promises on statehood for both Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Speaking at the launch of Harinder Baweja’s book, They Will Shoot You, Madam, Abdullah said delays in restoring statehood have deepened public mistrust.

Centre’s Unfulfilled Promises

Abdullah alleged that Ladakhi leaders were misled with “impossible” assurances, such as the Sixth Schedule, to encourage participation in Hill Council elections. “Everyone knew granting the Sixth Schedule was nearly impossible due to defence requirements along the borders, yet promises were made,” he said.

The CM also criticized the sudden change in the government’s stance toward Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was detained under the National Security Act following protests demanding Sixth Schedule inclusion. Abdullah pointed out that Wangchuk had previously praised the government for granting UT status to Ladakh in 2019.

Statehood for J-K

On Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah said the three-stage roadmap—delimitation, elections, and restoration of statehood—had stalled at the final stage. “The first two stages are complete, but statehood remains pending, creating a trust deficit,” he said, adding that linking statehood to incidents like the Pahalgam terror attack undermines public faith.

People’s Concerns

Stressing that the issue is about the people, not the land, Abdullah said residents seek respect, ownership, and recognition of their aspirations.

The event was attended by former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh. Baweja’s book chronicles his reporting from conflict zones in Punjab, J-K, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on Friday under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) following violent protests in Leh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh. The demonstrations earlier this week left four people dead and nearly 100 injured.

Ladakh Police chief SD Singh Jamwal led the team that detained Wangchuk around 2:30 pm. Soon after, he was moved to a high-security jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Authorities also imposed curfew-like restrictions and suspended mobile internet services across Leh district as a precautionary measure.

Sources said Wangchuk was preparing to address a virtual press briefing from his village when police arrived. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, condemned the arrest, alleging that police “ransacked” their home and accused the government of running a smear campaign. “This is the worst form of democracy. They have taken him away without trial or reason,” she said, calling the move an attempt to portray her husband as “anti-national.”

Opposition leaders also criticized the action. The Congress accused the BJP-led government of diverting attention from its failure to maintain law and order in Ladakh. J&K National Conference leader Omar Abdullah called the arrest “unfortunate,” while PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti described it as “deeply disturbing,” noting Wangchuk’s lifelong commitment to peace and education.

Wangchuk, a key leader of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance, has long campaigned for Ladakh’s statehood and constitutional safeguards. He recently ended a 35-day hunger strike after violence broke out in Leh, where protesters set fire to the BJP office, the Leh Hill Council building, and several vehicles.

Speaking to the media hours before his arrest, Wangchuk questioned how a person dedicated to education and innovation could be jailed while “those who loot the government walk free.”

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that there is a growing impression that J&K may not get Statehood because the BJP failed to win the last Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters in Srinagar on September 24, 2025, he stressed that the BJP was the only party that opposed the restoration of Statehood. Omar Abdullah repeated that J&K may not get Statehood only because the BJP lost, which he called an injustice.

Abdullah reminded that the Centre and the Supreme Court had promised a three-step process—delimitation, elections, and then Statehood. He said the first two steps had been completed. People turned out in large numbers to vote, yet the process stalled because BJP could not secure victory. “People cannot be punished for BJP’s defeat,” he remarked.

He also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not mentioning Statehood in his national address. According to Abdullah, opposition to Statehood restoration comes only from the BJP.

On tourism, the Chief Minister admitted that visitor numbers remained below expectations despite efforts. He also defended the “I Love Muhammad” campaign, calling criticism of it baseless. He argued that expressing devotion to religious figures cannot be treated as illegal.

Abdullah said his government would continue to fight for Statehood while addressing other pressing issues in the Union Territory.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Sunday (September 21, 2025) that peace is a prerequisite for tourism and sports in Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed that no sector can grow without stability.

“Peace is the foundation for everything. If we plan day and night matches but the situation is tense, who will come to play?” he asked while launching the jersey of Real Kashmir Football Club in Srinagar. He said the new jersey also carried the message of peace.

His remarks followed those of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who had said a day earlier that peace was the prerequisite for development in the Union Territory. Mr. Sinha admitted that remnants of terrorism still exist.

Omar Abdullah said law and order does not fall under his government’s control. “Yet we are blamed for every incident in J&K,” he noted. He urged security agencies to fulfill their responsibility in restoring peace.

The Chief Minister also underlined his government’s focus on youth and sports. He said sports facilities are coming up in nearly every assembly segment. “We build infrastructure based on youth interest and then hand it over to them,” he added.

He announced that the Kashmir Marathon will take place in Srinagar on November 2 and invited athletes across India to join.

Speaking on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, he said rains damaged a 300-metre stretch. The repair will be done soon, and vehicles are moving freely for now.

Jammu and Kashmir is facing a controversy over the holiday for Eid-e-Milad, which marks the birth of Prophet Mohammad. Although the lunar calendar places the holiday on September 6, the government declared it for today, September 5. The elected government has called the decision unjust and an attempt to hurt the sentiments of the people. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the move, calling it a “deliberate decision by the unelected government.” He emphasized that the holiday should be based on the moon sighting, as stated in the government calendar.

Sakina Itoo, the Health and Education Minister, also expressed dissatisfaction, accusing the Lt Governor-led administration of playing with the emotions of the people. Religious leaders, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, condemned the decision, calling it a disregard for the sacred occasion of Eid-e-Milad.

This controversy adds to the ongoing tension between the elected government and Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, with frequent disputes over administrative powers and decisions. This is not the first time the government has observed holidays on incorrect dates, causing further frustration among the people.
