Anurag, a 6th-class student, accidentally consumed paraquat poison, which caused severe lung damage. Doctors acted quickly as he arrived at Yashoda Hospital-Somajiguda in a life-threatening condition.

The paraquat toxins had reached his lungs, causing irreversible pulmonary fibrosis. Despite two weeks on ECMO support, the patient showed no improvement. The medical team immediately listed him for an emergency lung transplant.

A team of pulmonary specialists – Dr Visveswaran Balasubramanian, Dr Chetan Rao, Dr Pankti Seth, Dr Ramya Reddy – worked alongside transplant surgeons Dr K R Balasubramanian and Dr Manjunath Bale. They collected lungs from a brain-dead donor and successfully completed the transplant at Yashoda Hospitals-Hitec City.

Dr Visveswaran Balasubramanian said the operation was crucial to save Anurag’s life. The hospital highlighted the success as a milestone in treating paraquat poisoning. The transplant reflects advancements in pediatric lung care and organ donation initiatives, giving hope to patients with critical pulmonary conditions worldwide.

Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital performed the successful transplant.

The patient, from Meerut, had been suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and severe mitral valve leakage. His condition worsened over the past four years, forcing two ICU admissions in six months. In August, his health collapsed again, and he was shifted to Delhi for urgent treatment.

On August 26, the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) informed the hospital about a matching donor heart in Chandigarh. The retrieval team rushed to secure the organ and flew it back on a commercial flight. Green corridors in Chandigarh, both airports, and Delhi city ensured the heart reached the hospital within 1 hour 55 minutes.

A team led by Dr. Sujay Shad, along with cardiac surgeons and specialists, immediately performed the transplant. The patient was on a heart-lung machine during the surgery. The donor heart began working successfully, and recovery started quickly.

Doctors said the patient was off the ventilator in 18 hours, eating normally, and walking lightly. They expect a strong long-term recovery.
