Guwahati, Assam — 25 November 2025:
The Assam Assembly MLAs suspension was enforced on Tuesday as two opposition legislators, Nurul Huda (Congress) and Sherman Ali Ahmed (Baghbor), were barred for the remainder of the ongoing winter session. The action followed a Privilege Committee report that found both MLAs guilty of misconduct toward Deputy Speaker Numal Momin.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary moved the resolution in the House, which was passed despite protests from the Congress benches. Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar argued that the committee’s findings lacked evidence, highlighting that CCTV footage from the corridor where the alleged incident occurred had not been shared with the opposition. “We do not accept this report. Huda did nothing wrong and was only protesting with other MLAs,” Sikdar stated.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary emphasised that the Privilege Committee had completed its investigation and submitted its findings, which the House was obliged to adopt. According to the ruling alliance, Huda physically confronted Momin during a protest in March, an allegation denied by both Huda and the Congress. Sherman Ali Ahmed had allegedly used unparliamentary language during Assembly proceedings the same month, which was later expunged from records.

The suspension highlights ongoing tensions between treasury and opposition benches in Assam, reflecting persistent friction over parliamentary conduct and decorum. The five-day winter session, which began on Tuesday, is scheduled to conclude on Saturday.

The Privilege Committee’s action underscores the Assam Assembly’s commitment to maintaining discipline among members while ensuring the integrity of legislative processes and the dignity of the House.

Former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu strongly criticized the Andhra Pradesh government for promoting a culture of freebies. Speaking at an event in Nellore, he questioned the purpose of offering free bus travel to women, stating that such welfare schemes should not become a habit.

He emphasized that governments should prioritize spending on education and healthcare, which can empower citizens and uplift the poor. Naidu urged the government to release a white paper on the state’s financial status, disclosing total borrowings and repayments over the past five years.

He also called for reforms in legislative conduct, suggesting suspension of members who use abusive language and mandatory training for MLAs and MPs on parliamentary behavior. Additionally, he stressed the need for swift judicial action, recommending that courts deliver verdicts in cases involving public representatives within two years and address shortages of judges promptly.
