He said this ambition reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for transforming India into a global powerhouse.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi will preside over the World Standards Day (WSD) programme on Tuesday. The event is organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. WSD recognises experts, engineers, scientists, policymakers, and innovators who ensure quality, safety, and sustainability.

The celebration will take place at the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS). BIS will release the National Lighting Code of India 2025 and launch the Learning Management System (LMS) and Online Standards Development (OSD) Module of the BIS Standards Portal.

This year’s theme, “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Sustainable Development Goals,” highlights the role of international standards in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BIS works with governments, industries, academia, and civil society to promote alignment and global cooperation.

World Standards Day began in 1970 to raise awareness about the importance of standards. BIS collaborates with ministries and industry associations to identify gaps and formulate standards. Recently, BIS seized goods from e-commerce companies that failed to meet certified standards, ensuring public safety and compliance.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Friday delivered a landmark verdict on the management of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, easing its earlier order and aiming to balance public safety with humane treatment.

In the revised directive, the Court allowed stray dogs to be sterilised, dewormed, and vaccinated, after which they may be released back into the localities where they were found. Only dogs that are rabid or display extreme aggression will be exempted and kept away from public areas.

The Court also banned feeding of stray dogs in public spaces, instructing municipalities to establish designated feeding zones in every ward. This move is expected to regulate care for strays while reducing risks of conflict between residents and animals.

Animal welfare activists welcomed the order. BJP MP and animal rights campaigner Maneka Gandhi called it a “scientific judgement,” while stressing the need for clarity on what constitutes “aggressive” canine behaviour.

The ruling follows protests against the Court’s earlier order requiring all stray dogs to be shifted permanently to shelters, a plan critics said was unworkable. The fresh approach is seen as a step toward creating a humane and practical framework for managing India’s stray dog population.
