Raju Slams AAP Liquor Policy as senior BJP leader and former IAS officer Dr. Jagmohan Singh Raju strongly criticised the Bhagwant Mann-led government for what he called a political stunt. He said the decision to declare Amritsar a “Holy City” means little when the government continues to dilute long-standing liquor restrictions.

Raju said the walled city followed a strict liquor prohibition for decades under the Punjab Liquor License Rules, 1956. He argued that the government replaced this strong framework with a weaker rule that restricts liquor sales only within 200 metres of the Golden Temple. He called the move regressive and said it hurts public sentiment.

Raju Slams AAP Liquor Policy again as he pointed out that the shift happened soon after the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued notice on a PIL filed by the K.S. Raju Legal Trust. The petition demands full “Holy City” status for Amritsar and a complete ban on liquor, meat and tobacco across the district.

Raju said the AAP government contradicted its own courtroom position. He said the state earlier defended the 1956 rules and opposed a total ban, citing revenue needs and hotel industry demands. He now wants the government to restore the original prohibition, declare the entire city a Holy City, and enforce a complete liquor ban before the next hearing on December 16, 2025.

Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar has stepped forward as the debate over the Centre’s 131st Amendment Bill intensifies across Punjab. The political temperature is rising quickly, yet Jakhar chose a calm and firm tone. He repeated that Chandigarh is an integral part of Punjab. His words aim to steady public opinion and reduce political friction.

Jakhar stressed that the Punjab BJP stands completely with the state. He said the party will protect Punjab’s rights on every issue. This includes the long-standing matters of Chandigarh and river waters. Moreover, he said the party will discuss every point with the Centre to remove confusion. As a Punjabi, he made it clear that Punjab always comes first for him. His message attempts to rebuild trust during a tense political moment.

Meanwhile, the Centre plans to introduce the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Winter Session. The Bill moves Chandigarh under Article 240, just like other Union Territories such as Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Because of this proposal, Punjab’s political landscape has shifted sharply. Parties that often disagree now stand together. AAP, Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal have all launched strong attacks on the Bill.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann led the front against it. He said again that Chandigarh is an integral part of Punjab. He reminded everyone that the city came up on land taken from Punjabi villages. Therefore, he argued that only Punjab holds the rightful claim. He also called the Bill a direct challenge to Punjab’s authority and promised a strong response.

As the Chandigarh Bill Row expands, the issue now carries emotional, historical, and political weight. With the Winter Session approaching, Punjab is preparing for a loud and intense confrontation.

The Congress on Monday accused both the AAP government in Punjab and the BJP-led Centre of colluding to obstruct Rahul Gandhi’s visit to flood-hit villages in the state. The party alleged that Gandhi, who had planned to tour the affected areas in Gurdaspur, was advised to cancel his visit under the pretext of security concerns.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann criticized Gandhi’s “delayed visit,” suggesting he should have waited for more water to recede before meeting people. Congress leaders rejected the claim, arguing that his presence was timely as the real hardships of villagers were now surfacing. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had personally called party president Mallikarjun Kharge, requesting that Gandhi avoid crossing the swollen Ravi river. Warring added that unlike PM Modi, who engaged in “photo-ops,” Gandhi connected with villagers directly.

Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa accused the AAP government of “deliberately obstructing” Gandhi’s programme, calling it “politically motivated and insensitive.” He questioned how the government could claim to ensure public safety if it could not protect a senior leader. Former Punjab CM Charanjit Channi also hit out at Mann, alleging that internal rifts within AAP kept him away from relief efforts. Channi defended Gandhi’s visit as an act of solidarity, while questioning whether the ₹1,600 crore central aid would be sufficient to rebuild flood-hit Punjab.

The search for AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra continues as Punjab Police extend their hunt across five states and Delhi. The MLA has been on the run since September 2, after escaping during a police raid in Karnal. The Punjab Police hunt for MLA Pathanmajra has now covered over 1,500 sq km, with teams from the anti-gangster task force and counter-intelligence also joining.

Police sources said Pathanmajra has completely gone off social media and is not using his phone, making the task difficult. Raids have been conducted in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, but he remains untraceable.

The MLA is wanted in a three-year-old case involving rape, cheating and criminal intimidation. His anticipatory bail plea in Patiala has been adjourned to September 10. The Haryana Police has also registered a case against him and his relative for obstruction and escape.

Pathanmajra claims he fled fearing an encounter, denying police allegations of gunfire. His arrest attempt came a day after he criticised the Mann government’s handling of Punjab’s flood relief operations.

The Punjab Police hunt for MLA Pathanmajra is expected to intensify in the coming days.
