Fugitive businessman Lalit Modi has issued a public apology after his controversial video with Vijay Mallya sparked outrage. The video recently went viral on social media and drew strong reactions across India.

Lalit Modi posted the apology on X, saying he never intended to hurt sentiments. He said he holds deep respect for India and the Indian government. He added that his statement was misrepresented and taken out of context. He expressed regret and offered a sincere apology.

The controversy began after a video from Vijay Mallya’s birthday party surfaced online. Lalit Modi shared the clip on Instagram. In the video, he jokingly referred to himself and Mallya as India’s “two biggest fugitives.” The caption added fuel to public anger.

The video triggered political and public backlash. Soon after, the Ministry of External Affairs faced questions on the return of economic offenders. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India remains committed to bringing back all fugitives who have evaded the law. He confirmed that the government continues talks with several countries on extradition.

Following the strong response and government stance, Lalit Modi deleted the video and issued his apology. The incident once again highlighted public sensitivity around fugitive offenders and accountability.

Assam Bangladeshi Muslim Population debate resurfaced after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a strong demographic claim. Speaking at a programme in Guwahati, Sarma said nearly 40 percent of Assam’s population consists of Bangladeshi-origin Muslims. He added that the 2027 census would clearly establish this figure.

The Chief Minister referred to the 2011 census, which recorded Muslims as 34 percent of Assam’s population. He said only around three percent were Assamese Muslims. According to him, the remaining population traced its roots to Bangladesh. Sarma pointed out that no census took place in 2021. He claimed population growth trends indicate the figure could rise to 40 percent by 2027.

Sarma described the situation as alarming. He warned that Assam’s demographic balance faces serious pressure. He also said the issue impacts national security, not just the state. The Chief Minister claimed that many Bangladeshi-origin residents now enjoy legal status, which worries the state government.

The statement comes as the Assam government tightens action against illegal immigration. Sarma said district commissioners have received clear instructions. Authorities must act against declared foreigners and illegal immigrants. Police and border forces will assist in deportation to Bangladesh.

The government plans to use existing legal provisions to identify and expel illegal residents. Officials say enforcement will continue without compromise.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday led the Ekta Padayatra in Sambalpur to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The march, which began at the Reserve Police Ground and concluded at the Women’s College Square, witnessed energetic participation from students, youth groups and several local organisations.

Addressing the gathering, Pradhan urged people to work with renewed dedication towards building a clean, healthy and progressive Odisha. He noted that the state will complete 100 years of its formation as a linguistic state in 2036, while India will celebrate 100 years of Independence in 2047.

“Our ancestors fought for Swaraj. Today, our duty is to fight for Samruddhi,” he said, stressing that the next two decades will be crucial for creating a developed Sambalpur, a developed Odisha and a developed India.

Emphasising the importance of civic responsibility, Pradhan encouraged citizens to transform Sambalpur into a model city inspired by Gandhian values. He highlighted the need to improve nutrition levels in rural regions and ensure proper care for children, especially newborns. Strengthening sports infrastructure, he added, will help instil confidence and self-reliance among nearly two lakh families living in the area.

Pradhan also recalled the contributions of icons such as the Bamanda king Sir Basudev Sudhal Deb, poet Gangadhar Meher and other eminent figures who played a vital role in shaping Odisha as a linguistic state.

During the march, the Union Minister paid floral tributes at the statue of Veer Surendra Sai near Jail Chowk and at the Shaheed Stambh at Nelson Mandela Chowk to honour the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for India.

Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik, Higher Education and Sports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, and Sambalpur MLA Jayanarayan Mishra were also present at the event.

RJD MLA Chandrashekhar slaps laborer during a drain inspection in Madhepura, Bihar. A video of the incident is going viral, and people are debating the MLA’s behaviour. In the video, RJD MLA Chandrashekhar slaps laborer after noticing problems in the ongoing drain work.

Chandrashekhar visited Purnia Gola Chowk in Madhepura to check the ₹72-crore drainage project. He became angry after seeing poor-quality construction. He said the work was not following basic standards. According to him, the drain must first receive brick flooring, then PCC, and finally RCC. But the company started laying RCC directly without removing the water, which made him upset.

The viral clip shows a laborer trying to leave the worksite on a tractor after spotting the MLA. Supporters stopped the tractor and called all workers to the location. The laborer tried to contact the contractor, which further annoyed the MLA, leading to the slap.

Local residents had earlier complained about irregularities in the project. Chandrashekhar said he would not tolerate carelessness in public works. Despite strong political challenges in the last Bihar Assembly elections, he had retained his seat by defeating JDU’s Kavita Kumari Saha by more than 7,000 votes.

Imphal:
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has alleged that “powerful groups” are attempting to divert public attention away from what he called the State’s central challenge — the presence of illegal immigrants. Singh said such forces are working deliberately to shift discourse to secondary issues, while the infiltration problem continues to threaten social stability.

Speaking to reporters, Singh claimed that anti-national and anti-State elements “must not be allowed” to distract the government and people from the real challenge of illegal foreign nationals entering Manipur through porous international borders. He asserted that systematic infiltration has altered security dynamics in the region and demanded stronger vigilance.

The former Chief Minister recalled that when his government initially began identifying and documenting illegal immigrants, his administration faced intense criticism from neighbouring States. However, he said that now the gravity of the issue has been recognised more widely.

According to Singh, multiple northeastern States — including Nagaland and Mizoram — have recently begun taking similar steps to detain and verify illegal foreign nationals. He argued that this shift reinforces his long-standing observation that unchecked migration poses demographic, social and law-and-order risks.

Singh urged both the State and the Union government to maintain long-term focus on identifying, verifying and deporting illegal immigrants to their countries of origin. He also appealed to civil society not to fall prey to misinformation campaigns allegedly aimed at diluting the issue.

Manipur shares a sensitive international border region connected to Myanmar, making it vulnerable to cross-border movement, trafficking routes and refugee inflows caused by conflict and instability.

Singh reiterated that national security agencies and the Manipur Police should prioritise border surveillance, investigation and demographic assessment to prevent further illegal entry into the State.

The Bihar election vote controversy has created a new debate in the state. The RJD is asking how two winning candidates from two different seats received the same number of votes. The party says this Bihar election vote controversy shows serious problems in the counting process.

The NDA has already formed the new government in Bihar, and ministries have been allotted. But the RJD, which faced a big defeat, is still looking for reasons behind its poor performance. The party is now targeting the Election Commission after noticing identical vote totals in Rajgir and Kudhani seats.

In Rajgir, JDU candidate Kaushal Kishore won with 107,811 votes. In Kudhani, BJP’s Kedar Prasad Gupta also won with 107,811 votes. RJD leaders compared it to two students submitting blank sheets and still getting the same marks.

Earlier, the RJD alleged irregularities in Nabingaar, Agiaon, and Sandesh seats. In all three seats, the number of rejected postal votes was higher than the margin of defeat.

This election has changed Bihar’s political map. BJP won 89 seats, JDU won 85, while the RJD slipped to third place with 25 seats.

She accused Tejashwi’s close aides, Sanjay Yadav and Rameez Nemat, of mistreating her.

Tej Pratap Yadav attacked Tejashwi again. He said that if he had toured the state for 20 days, the RJD would have dropped to only five seats. He claimed that the people of Bihar no longer trust the party because it has moved away from Lalu Prasad Yadav’s values.

Tej Pratap added that he never expelled anyone. He said he was pushed out by his own people. He stated that Bihar now wants leaders who stand with truth, not sycophants.

The Grand Alliance also faced a huge loss, winning only 35 seats. Congress won 6, CPI-ML won 2, IPP won 1, CPI(M) won 1, and VPI won none.

In the video, he targets Sanaur constituency in-charge Ranjoadh Singh Handhana, claiming the projects currently being inaugurated were already approved during his tenure.

Pathanmajra advised Handhana not to “waste time on old projects” and instead bring fresh development ideas. He accused the party of filing cases against him to “drive him away,” saying he was forced to leave because of the pressure.

He further alleged that the ₹100 crore being cited as recent development funding was secured due to his own efforts. “These roads and stadiums were approved because of me and my brother Gaurav,” he said, adding that he worked tirelessly to get multiple projects sanctioned, including the Pehowa road.

Calling Handhana “shameful” for taking credit, Pathanmajra said the constituency in-charge was celebrating work he had no role in approving. “The day you get something passed on your own, I will praise you,” he said, reiterating that accusations against him were politically motivated to push him out.

The Maharashtra Local Polls Quota Cap issue reached the Supreme Court on Monday, where the bench sternly cautioned the state government against exceeding the 50% reservation ceiling in upcoming local body elections. The court said it will not hesitate to halt the election process if authorities attempt to implement reservation percentages beyond the constitutionally permitted limit.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra questioned the Maharashtra government over its dependence on the Banthia Commission findings, which have reportedly not undergone full legal verification. The court directed that elections must proceed based on the pre-commission reservation structure until the matter is fully adjudicated.

The hearing was triggered by petitions claiming that some local bodies were prepared to implement reservation percentages as high as 70%, including quotas for SC, ST and OBC communities combined. The court reiterated that such figures violate the constitutional mandate and the principles laid down in the 2021 “triple-test” judgment, which outlines the essential criteria for granting OBC reservation in local elections.

The Supreme Court issued notices to the state government and relevant stakeholders while scheduling the next hearing for November 19. The bench emphasized that while affirmative action policies are vital, they must balance constitutional safeguards, equality before law, and administrative fairness.

Legal experts view this order as a critical milestone in the long-running debate over reservation caps and the governance of local electoral structures. Political reactions are expected to intensify as nomination processes are already underway, potentially leading to procedural delays depending on the court’s final ruling.
