Delhi’s air quality has shown a slight improvement, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) measured at 370, according to the latest data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Despite this minor improvement, the city remains in the “very poor” category, indicating severe health risks for residents, especially children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions.

Authorities report that PM2.5 and PM10 levels continue to be dangerously high, contributing to persistent smog across the city. Factors such as vehicular emissions, industrial activity, and dust from construction sites remain significant contributors to Delhi’s poor air quality. The seasonal weather pattern, including low wind speeds and cooler temperatures, also reduces the dispersion of pollutants.

The Delhi government has advised citizens to limit outdoor activities, wear masks when stepping out, and use air purifiers indoors if possible. Schools and public institutions are monitoring the situation closely and taking precautions to protect students and vulnerable groups.

Experts noted that the slight improvement is due to favourable wind patterns, which are helping disperse some pollutants. However, they caution that the AQI remains well above the safe limit, posing continued health risks. Pollution from neighboring states also affects Delhi’s air quality, making regional cooperation essential for effective management.

Authorities continue to implement measures such as stricter vehicular emission controls, suspension of construction during peak smog periods, and promotion of public transportation to reduce pollution. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about daily AQI readings and follow safety guidelines to minimize exposure.

The government emphasizes that both short-term interventions and long-term strategies are necessary to combat air pollution and safeguard public health in Delhi. Citizens are urged to play their part in reducing emissions and adopting eco-friendly practices.

Tarn Taran district has reported the highest number of farm fire cases in Punjab. Out of 49 new cases reported today, 16 came from Tarn Taran. The district now accounts for nearly one-third of the total 561 farm fire incidents in the state. This farm fire issue in Tarn Taran is raising serious environmental concerns.

Amritsar follows with 135 cases, while Ferozepur reported 66. The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has fined violators ₹13.25 lakh and recovered ₹8.95 lakh. Police have filed 215 FIRs under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for stubble burning violations. Tarn Taran alone saw 68 FIRs.

The farm fire issue in Tarn Taran also worsened Punjab’s air quality. The AQI levels stood at 198 in Ludhiana, 165 in Jalandhar, and 200 in Mandi Gobindgarh— all in the ‘moderate’ range.

Meanwhile, 18 farmers in Sangrur were honoured for avoiding stubble burning. Officials praised them as local heroes for protecting nature and inspiring others.

“No Ambuja Cement Factory” – this slogan echoed across Peda Gantyada village in Gajuwaka, Visakhapatnam district, as hundreds of villagers, especially women and youth, staged a massive protest on Wednesday. They strongly opposed the proposed Ambuja Cement Factory, fearing it would destroy farmlands and increase pollution.

The protesters said that existing industries have already caused serious air, water, and soil pollution, affecting children’s health. Adding another cement plant, they argued, would make life unbearable. “How can we live if another polluting factory comes here?” asked angry residents. They accused the government of sacrificing people’s livelihoods for industrial expansion.

Leaders from CPM and several public organizations joined the villagers, demanding the immediate cancellation of the factory plan. The protest grew intense, forcing the police to deploy in large numbers. Locals also expressed anger at regional leaders who supported the project. Officials stated they would record public opinions and submit a report, but tension continued to grip the area.

The “No Ambuja Cement Factory” protest at Peda Gantyada highlights growing resistance in Visakhapatnam district against unchecked industrial expansion.

Startups, researchers, businesses, and stakeholders from both regions are invited to co-develop innovative solutions. Dr. Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary at OPSA, said the initiative aims for solutions that are globally relevant and locally effective.

Highlighting India’s efforts, Maini cited the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar campaign and the ban on single-use plastics. She emphasized research, innovation, and collaboration as essential to addressing plastic pollution in India and Europe.

Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, said the Ideathon strengthens India-EU cooperation. Participants are encouraged to explore collaborative solutions to tackle marine pollution, protect marine life, public health, and coastal economies.

Presentations on the current state of marine litter were made by Professor Hoysala N. Chanakya of IISc Bangalore and John Hanus of the European Commission. The Ideathon framework, process, and timelines were shared, with applications open until October 2, 2025, inviting active participation to create sustainable, practical solutions.
