The rising protests against migrant workers in Punjab have created panic among industrialists and workers alike. The MSME Forum, representing 2,000 small and medium businesses, has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for intervention to safeguard the rights of migrant workers.

Badish Jindal, president of the MSME Forum, stated that over 18 lakh migrant workers play a key role in Punjab’s industries and agriculture, contributing significantly to the state’s economy. In Ludhiana, around 8 lakh migrant workers are employed in industries, and many others work in farming and domestic sectors.

Jindal warned that ongoing protests could lead to an exodus of migrant workers, crippling Punjab’s industries and economy. He urged the state government to take action against those inciting violence and ensure the protection of migrant workers’ livelihoods.

The situation is also leading to reports of exploitation, with migrants facing robberies and harassment. The MSME Forum has called for immediate measures to prevent further damage to the state’s industrial and economic stability.

Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, said the decision reflected Punjab’s anger against neglect by both state and central governments.

He explained that floods had destroyed homes, fields, and livelihoods across Punjab. These were not only natural calamities but also the result of official negligence. The Centre, he added, failed to announce a timely relief package, exposing its indifference to the state’s suffering.

The boycott, according to Tarsem Singh, was a principled stand for Punjab’s rights. He stressed that Sikh political prisoners remain in jails despite completing their sentences. Amritpal Singh, who won Parliament with the highest margin, has been targeted under NSA for the third time.

He concluded that both BJP and Congress betrayed Punjab. The boycott, he said, should be remembered as a historic protest demanding justice and dignity for the people of the state.

The MLA faces rape and cheating charges filed by a Zirakpur woman in Patiala.

Police said they detained him briefly, but supporters pelted stones and created chaos, helping him escape. Villagers, however, denied firing or violence, insisting Pathanmajra was at his relative Gurnam Singh’s house. Later, Punjab Police retracted their firing claim, saying it only “appeared so”.

The state government recently withdrew the MLA’s security cover and transferred officers in his constituency. Pathanmajra had criticised his own party over mishandling flood relief and accused a “Delhi lobby” of interfering in Punjab’s affairs. He also alleged corruption in river desilting work.

AAP leader Baltej Pannu alleged the MLA escaped after his supporters attacked police, even claiming he ran over a policeman. The complainant accused Pathanmajra of exploiting and threatening her again on August 25.

Police booked him and others under several BNS sections. Calling the case politically motivated, Pathanmajra went live on social media and said he would not be silenced.
