Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has called an emergency meeting in Chandigarh to address the Punjab floods. The meeting will include district presidents and assembly in-charges to review damage and plan relief measures. Senior leader Daljit Singh Cheema said the party will gather feedback and intensify relief efforts.

Earlier, Badal demanded a ₹20,000 crore flood relief package and a full farm loan waiver for farmers and labourers. He stressed that Punjab’s farmers, who powered India’s Green Revolution, deserve national support. He also announced plans to desilt farmland using machinery and volunteers, stating he was ready to face action for protecting farmers’ rights.

Badal personally visited flood-hit areas in Nakodar, Phillaur, and Sahnewal, providing cash aid and diesel for relief operations. He distributed over ₹25 lakh and 40,000 litres of diesel to strengthen bundhs and support earth-moving work. Local farmers complained that the AAP government had failed to provide timely help. SAD leaders joined him during these visits.

This emergency meeting comes a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Punjab.

Doctors said his condition improved remarkably, and he may be discharged soon.

Mann had been running a high fever for three days, reportedly due to a bacterial infection. He also complained of exhaustion and a low heart rate. Sources said he likely contracted the infection from unclean water during his visits to flood-hit areas earlier this week. Initially treated at home, he was later shifted to hospital when his condition did not improve.

Because of his illness, the Punjab Cabinet meeting scheduled for Thursday evening was cancelled. The meeting was meant to review the ongoing crisis in flood-ravaged areas. Floods have already caused 43 deaths and damaged crops across 4.3 lakh acres.

AAP officials dismissed speculation linking his illness to political developments, including the escape of party MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra. Meanwhile, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal visited Mann in the hospital before heading to Sultanpur Lodhi with AAP Punjab Chief Aman Arora to oversee relief efforts.

Mann’s recovery brings relief to the state leadership during Punjab’s ongoing flood crisis.

Chandigarh: Punjab is reeling under one of its worst flood crises in recent years, with the death toll climbing to 37. Officials confirmed that seven more people lost their lives on Wednesday as torrential rains and overflowing rivers continued to batter the state.

According to disaster management authorities, nearly 3.55 lakh people have been directly affected. Vast stretches of farmland—around 175,216 hectares of standing crops—are under water, raising fears of huge losses for farmers just ahead of the harvest season.

The state government has declared Punjab a disaster-hit state, placing all key departments on emergency duty. Public Works, Water Resources, Power, and Health teams are working around the clock to restore connectivity, electricity, and essential supplies. Telecom providers have been instructed to ensure stable networks so that rescue operations remain uninterrupted.

The situation worsened after heavy inflows into the Bhakra Dam, which has reached close to its danger mark. Authorities were forced to release more than 80,000 cusecs of water into the Sutlej River, causing fresh flooding in low-lying areas of Ferozepur and Fazilka. Several villages have been cut off, prompting large-scale evacuations.

With crops destroyed, villages submerged, and thousands displaced, Punjab now faces a dual challenge: immediate relief for flood victims and long-term measures to strengthen flood management. Officials said assessments are ongoing to finalize compensation packages for affected families and farmers.

The two leaders toured villages in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Kapurthala, regions badly hit by the recent floods that have displaced thousands and destroyed crops across large stretches of farmland.

During the visit, Kejriwal and Mann interacted with families staying in relief camps and those whose homes had been submerged. They reassured residents that both the state government and AAP workers were working tirelessly to provide immediate assistance. Relief camps have been set up to distribute food, medicines, and safe drinking water, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local teams continue rescue operations with boats in waterlogged villages.

Kejriwal emphasized that AAP volunteers from across the country have contributed to Punjab’s relief efforts. He pointed out that Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj had already reached Punjab with relief material collected from traders and resident groups. “The entire nation stands with Punjab in this difficult time,” Kejriwal said, highlighting the importance of nationwide solidarity.

Adding to the relief drive, several AAP MPs have sanctioned funds from their MPLADS allocations. Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha released ₹3.25 crore, including ₹2.75 crore for strengthening embankments and ₹50 lakh for immediate aid. MP Sandeep Pathak sanctioned ₹5 crore for reconstruction in Ferozepur, promising to work closely with local officials to ensure quick delivery of assistance.

Chief Minister Mann stated that the government will prioritize farmers who lost standing crops, with compensation packages being prepared. He also called for stronger long-term flood management systems, including better drainage, embankment protection, and early warning mechanisms.

With more than 3.5 lakh people affected across Punjab, today’s visit by Kejriwal and Mann underscored the urgency of relief, rehabilitation, and preventive planning. He stressed the need for a permanent solution to stop recurring floods in the region. The former Delhi minister is the first AAP national leader to visit the flood-hit villages, joined by MP Balbir Singh Seechewal and local party leaders.

The AAP party, ministers, MLAs, and Seechewal’s volunteers are working together to provide relief. Sisodia praised the spirit of Punjab, calling it “Punjabiyat,” where people selflessly help each other in tough times. He said the joint efforts of the state government and society are bringing immediate relief to affected families.

While relief continues, he noted the real challenge will begin once the floodwaters recede. Preparations are already underway to support rehabilitation and long-term safety. The state government will also seek expert advice from Seechewal to prevent future floods.

Seechewal raised the concerns of debt-ridden farmers, requesting relief on bank dues. Sisodia promised that the matter would be taken up with the state government for consideration.
