New Year 2026 Weather Update brings fresh concern for Punjab residents as several districts remain under the grip of dense fog. On Tuesday morning, thick fog reduced visibility across Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and surrounding areas, slowing traffic and disrupting daily movement. Chandigarh also witnessed similar conditions, with vehicles crawling due to poor visibility.

Weather experts warn that the cold will intensify with the arrival of the New Year. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snowfall in higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh over the next 96 hours. This weather system will push icy winds into the plains, impacting Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan.

After snowfall, a strong cold wave from the mountains is expected to sweep across North India. Night temperatures in several Himachal towns may drop between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius. Punjab and Chandigarh could see minimum temperatures fall further to 2–4 degrees Celsius during early January.

Health experts advise people to stay warm, avoid early morning travel, and take extra care during foggy hours. Farmers may benefit from moisture, but commuters should remain cautious as dense fog is likely to persist in the coming days.

Punjab continues to battle harsh winter conditions as dry cold, dense fog, and chilly winds grip the state. The prolonged lack of rainfall has intensified discomfort and affected daily life across districts.

Doctors report a rise in seasonal illnesses, including cough, cold, sore throat, and breathing issues. Children and elderly people face higher risk during this weather phase. Health experts link the surge in cases to dry cold and fluctuating temperatures.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for dense fog in several districts today. Visibility may drop to extremely low levels, increasing risks for road, rail, and air travel. A Yellow Alert will remain in place for the next three days, especially during night and early morning hours.

Meteorologist Pavneet Kaur Kingra from Punjab Agricultural University said light rain is likely on December 31 and January 1. She explained that the rainfall may bring temporary relief from dry cold and help reduce fog intensity.

Weather officials, however, warned that cold conditions may intensify after January 1. Night temperatures could drop by three to four degrees Celsius due to icy winds from snow-covered hills.

Despite health concerns, experts say the expected rain will benefit wheat and other rabi crops by improving soil moisture. Residents have been advised to stay warm, limit early-morning exposure, and follow fog-related safety precautions.

Winter has tightened its grip on Punjab as temperatures continue to fall across the state. Adampur recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 2.6°C on Sunday, confirming the arrival of a stronger cold wave. The minimum temperature rose slightly by 0.4°C, yet cities like Ludhiana, Patiala and Bathinda stayed below their normal range.

The India Meteorological Department said Punjab will see dry weather for the next seven days. However, the neighbouring hill states may face rain and snowfall. Light showers and snow are expected in the higher and mid-hill regions of Chamba, Kangra and Kullu on December 7 and 8. These conditions may trigger fog across Punjab and other parts of North India.

Day temperatures increased marginally in Punjab. The maximum temperature rose by 1.6°C on Saturday and now remains close to normal levels. Bathinda was the warmest in the state with a maximum of 27.6°C.

With dipping temperatures, the state is likely to experience denser fog in the coming days. Authorities have advised motorists to take precautions during early morning and late evening travel.
