Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje said the four new Labour Codes aim to build a “Viksit Bharat” and ensure social security for mine workers, including contractual staff. She called on the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) to raise awareness about the Codes and adopt modern technologies to improve mine safety.

Speaking at DGMS’s 125th Foundation Day in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Karandlaje highlighted the organisation’s century-long role in protecting mine workers. She praised the dedication of workers who face risks daily and stressed that mining contributes directly to India’s growth story. The minister reiterated that worker safety remains the government’s top priority under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “First Safety” vision.

Karandlaje underscored the need for uniform safety standards across mining operations and called for closer coordination between central and state authorities. She urged DGMS regional offices to play a proactive role in enforcing safety norms. The minister also acknowledged the sacrifices and tireless efforts of generations of mine officials and workers.

On the occasion, Karandlaje inaugurated the DGMS exhibition, old records section, and models gallery. She released a new DGMS logo, the organisation’s theme song, and a digital coffee table book documenting its journey. A souvenir compendium of best practices in mine safety was also unveiled to celebrate DGMS’s contribution to sustainable mining.

Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport marked Aviation Safety Week 2025 with a focused series of activities. The programme ran from November 24 to 28 and brought together airport staff, airlines, ATC teams and local residents.

The week began with an inauguration led by the Airport Director. He also met department heads to set clear goals. A training session followed and covered hazard reporting, FOD control and wildlife risk reduction. These sessions encouraged direct and timely reporting.

On November 25, the team carried out a Runway FOD Walk. Senior officials and airline representatives joined the activity. ATC officers attended a session on manual updates and situational awareness. Later, the Operations team visited Raja Sansi village to promote safe waste disposal and reduce bird activity.

The next day focused on Low Visibility Procedures. Airside drivers learned safe driving steps for CAT-II and CAT-III conditions. Electrical teams also checked AGL, ALS and DG systems and ensured proper functioning.

Fire Services led full-scale emergency drills on November 27. A drawing competition in AAI Colony added community engagement.

The final day highlighted the key message: safety grows through continuous practice. Aviation Safety Week 2025 strengthened awareness and encouraged teamwork across all departments.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reacted strongly to the gang-rape of a medical student in Durgapur. She said girls should avoid going out at night and asked police to take strict action against the accused. Speaking at Kolkata Airport, she reminded that the state maintains a zero-tolerance policy against such crimes.

Banerjee added that private colleges must ensure the safety of their students. She urged young women, especially those living in hostels, to remain cautious while moving outside at night. “Everyone is free to go anywhere, but safety must come first,” she said, stressing that no culprit will be spared.

Three people — Sheikh Reajuddin, Apu Bauri, and Firdos Seikh — were arrested on Sunday for the gang-rape of a second-year medical student from Odisha. Police have launched a search for two more suspects. The student was allegedly attacked after going out for dinner with a friend.

According to police, the men followed the duo, chased away the friend, and assaulted the student. The National Commission for Women has demanded an action report from the Bengal DGP within five days.
