US President Donald Trump has announced a sharp increase in H1-B visa fees, raising it to \$100,000. This move is expected to have a severe impact on Indian professionals, who form the majority of H1-B holders. Experts warn that job opportunities for Indians in America will see a steep decline as companies will become more selective in hiring foreign workers.

The new policy will particularly affect Indian students pursuing MS degrees in the US. With higher visa costs, the number of students opting for American universities is likely to fall significantly . Even those who complete their MS will now need to prove exceptional productivity, worth the high sponsorship cost, before companies consider them for employment.

The hike in fees essentially means companies cannot hire just anyone under the H1-B program. Only the most skilled and valuable candidates will stand a chance, making jobs in the US harder to secure for many Indians.

The United States government issues H1-B visas every year to attract skilled foreign professionals, particularly in technology, engineering, finance, and healthcare sectors. Among all nationalities, Indians dominate the H1-B visa category. Reports reveal that 72% of the total visas issued so far have gone to Indian professionals, amounting to 3,20,791 visas.

China stands second with 55,038 visas , which accounts for 12.5% . Canada follows with around 4,235 visas (1%) , while South Korea has 4,097 visas (0.9%). Additionally, 3,501 visas (0.8%) were issued to applicants from other countries.

These numbers highlight India’s strong presence in the US job market, especially in the IT and software industry. The demand for Indian professionals continues to grow, making them the largest group benefitting from the H1-B program. This dominance reflects India’s skilled workforce and its critical role in driving America’s technological and economic growth.
