Nepal is witnessing massive public anger as citizens rise against corruption and restrictions on free speech. The government’s decision to impose a ban on social media platforms to silence dissent has backfired, sparking widespread protests across the country. Furious demonstrators chased elected leaders through the streets, forcing Prime Minister K.P. Oli to reportedly flee to Dubai.

Observers note that the situation mirrors last year’s events in Bangladesh, where intense public uprisings led to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Amid mass anger and accusations of corruption, she fled the country and sought refuge in India.

The developments in Nepal highlight how quickly public frustration can topple governments when people feel suppressed and unheard. Analysts warn that the region is entering a volatile phase, with democracy and governance being tested by waves of public uprisings driven by demands for accountability and freedom.

Nepal has lifted its controversial ban on social media platforms after a week of violent protests led by young demonstrators that left 19 people dead and hundreds more injured. The decision comes amid mounting criticism of the government’s heavy-handed response to the unrest.

The ban, introduced last week, blocked more than two dozen major platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, X, and YouTube. Officials had argued that these companies failed to formally register under new digital compliance rules. But the restrictions sparked immediate outrage, particularly among students and young professionals who saw the move as an attack on free expression.

Protests quickly spread through Kathmandu and other major cities. Thousands of young people, many wearing school uniforms, marched through the streets carrying placards with slogans such as “Stop corruption, not social media.” Demonstrators attempted to break through police barricades around Parliament, prompting security forces to respond with water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and eventually live rounds.

Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli expressed regret over the loss of life but argued that the violence stemmed from “ambiguity” in the way the new rules were communicated. He promised better dialogue with the public while insisting that the government’s intent was to promote accountability, not censorship.

The fallout has already reshaped Nepal’s political landscape. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on moral grounds, and the government has formed a committee to investigate the violence, with a report expected within two weeks. International human rights groups and foreign embassies have condemned the excessive force and called for transparency in the inquiry.

With the ban now lifted, Nepal’s youth activists say the protests reflect deeper frustrations over corruption, unemployment, and lack of political accountability – issues likely to fuel further unrest if left unaddressed.

Nepal Gen Z protests social media ban and corruption in a dramatic show of defiance against the government. Nepal Gen Z protests social issues after police action in Kathmandu left six people dead on Monday, September 8, 2025.

Thousands of young demonstrators, mostly from the country’s digital-savvy Generation Z, flooded the streets of Kathmandu and other cities. They demanded an end to corruption and immediate withdrawal of the government’s recent ban on social media platforms.

Police tried to disperse the crowds, leading to violent clashes. Officers opened fire in some areas, killing at least six protesters and injuring many more. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with tear gas, stones, and baton charges turning protests into running battles.

Protesters accused the government of stifling free expression and silencing youth voices. They vowed to continue demonstrations until the ban is lifted and anti-corruption reforms begin.

Leaders of opposition parties expressed support for the movement and called for accountability. International rights groups also urged Nepal’s government to respect freedom of speech and avoid excessive force.

The unrest marks one of the most intense youth-led uprisings in Nepal in recent years, highlighting rising frustration with corruption and authoritarian measures.
