The Election Commission voter list revision will soon begin its third phase across 17 states and several Union Territories. The Election Commission plans this exercise to clean and update electoral rolls before future elections.

Under the Election Commission voter list revision, officials will verify voter details through door-to-door checks and data verification. The aim is to remove duplicate entries, delete names of deceased voters, and add newly eligible citizens to the voter list.

Earlier phases of the Special Intensive Revision already covered several states. During the previous phase, authorities removed millions of incorrect or duplicate entries after detailed verification to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls.

The upcoming phase will cover a large number of voters in the remaining states and Union Territories. Officials say the large-scale revision will help maintain an accurate voter database and strengthen the election process across the country.

The Election Commission will also allow citizens to apply for corrections, transfers, or new registrations during the revision process.

BJP leader Haribhushan Thakur Bachhaul has claimed that SIR in Bengal will change the upcoming Assembly elections. Thakur, who recently lost the Bisfi seat in Bihar, said that Mamata Banerjee will win her seat, but she will not come to power.

He explained that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list is happening in West Bengal. According to him, the revision will remove fake voters. He claimed that voter IDs are being created using the names of many “fathers” for one person. He believes that this process will expose false entries.

While speaking to a YouTube channel in Patna, Thakur said that defeat and victory are part of politics. He also alleged that the candidate who defeated him used money heavily during the Bihar election.

Thakur accused the Election Commission of failing to conduct a fair election in Bisfi. He said that officials like the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, and DDC helped the opposition. He added that 75–80% voting happened in 80 booths and claimed that CCTV footage will reveal the truth.

Commenting on West Bengal, he said Mamata Banerjee enjoys strong Muslim support and some Hindu votes. But this time, SIR in Bengal will change the result, and she will not return to power.

Thakur also predicted a big victory for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, saying Yogi Adityanath will win comfortably.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a strict action against booth-level officers (BLOs) in West Bengal. The move follows serious irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Officials said FIRs have been filed against eight booth-level agents (BLAs) for interfering in form distribution and taking control from BLOs.

At the same time, the commission issued show-cause notices to eight BLOs for violating norms. They allegedly used shortcut methods for distributing enumeration forms from one place instead of visiting homes. Despite an earlier warning, these officers from Cooch Behar, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas repeated the violation, prompting further action.

The ECI directed all Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant EROs to monitor BLOs closely. It warned that handing over forms to third parties, including relatives or friends, would be treated as a serious breach of conduct. The commission stressed that the process must strictly follow ECI guidelines.

Over four crore enumeration forms were distributed by Saturday evening. The total number of voters in West Bengal stands at 7.66 crore. The commission aims to complete distribution by the end of this month, continuing its drive for accurate electoral rolls.

The Congress on Friday raised questions over Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s silence on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list, a process recently conducted in Bihar and proposed for other states ahead of elections.

Addressing the media in Kannur, AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal said, “SIR on the eve of elections is opposed by all parties in the INDIA bloc, including CPI(M). Chief Ministers like M K Stalin, Mamata Banerjee, and Hemant Soren have spoken against it, but Pinarayi Vijayan remains silent.” Venugopal accused the CM of double standards, noting that while CPI(M) leaders nationally have opposed the SIR, Vijayan has limited his comments to Kerala-specific issues.

Earlier, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Kerala, Rathan U Kelkar, had convened a meeting with all political parties. Both Congress and CPI(M) opposed the SIR, while BJP supported it. Considering the upcoming local body elections in December, Kelkar requested the Election Commission to postpone the revision.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan warned that conducting the SIR while the matter is pending in the Supreme Court could amount to contempt. He also alleged that the exercise might indirectly implement the citizenship register, removing migrant voters, and described using 2022 voter rolls as the base as unscientific.

The controversy underscores growing political tensions over the SIR and its implications for voter representation in Kerala ahead of crucial elections.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed that the 2003 rolls be compared with current data under SIR-1.1.2026.

On Monday, electoral registration officers sent letters to schools, colleges, and government departments. These letters instructed them to relieve Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) and Supervisory Officers on September 16–17. The officers will verify voter records and check constituency-level lists.

Senior officers said the work involves field checks and timely reporting. Constituencies created after 2003 need fresh data since they were not part of earlier rolls. Officials stressed that the task must be completed quickly to ensure readiness.

District teams have already begun comparing records and compiling the information. Once complete, they will forward the updated rolls to the state election office.

Even though the CEO’s office labeled earlier reports as speculative, ground-level action shows Punjab is moving in step with states like Bihar. The revision aims to create accurate voter rolls and ensure smooth elections in the coming years.
