Taiwan overtakes India as world’s fifth largest stock market in a major shift in global financial rankings. The rise came after Taiwan’s technology stocks surged due to the growing demand for artificial intelligence chips.

Taiwan overtakes India as world’s fifth largest stock market mainly because of the strong performance of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The company benefited from the global AI boom and rising chip demand. Reports say Taiwan’s market value reached nearly $4.95 trillion, slightly ahead of India’s $4.92 trillion.

India’s stock market faced pressure from foreign investor outflows, weak earnings growth, and global economic concerns. Analysts also noted that Taiwan’s market gained strength from heavy investments in semiconductor and AI sectors.

However, market experts believe India still has a more diversified economy with strong long-term growth potential.

Bank of Maharashtra has fixed January 13, 2026, as the date for its board meeting to review and approve the bank’s financial performance for the third quarter of the current financial year. Along with the Q3 results, the board will also examine a proposal to declare an interim dividend for shareholders for FY26.

The public sector lender informed stock exchanges about the scheduled meeting through a regulatory filing. The results will cover the quarter ended December 31, 2025, and will provide details on the bank’s income, profits, asset quality, and overall financial position.

Apart from quarterly earnings, the board will decide whether the bank is in a position to reward shareholders with an interim dividend. If approved, the bank will announce the dividend amount and other related details after the meeting. Investors often view interim dividends as a positive signal, as they reflect confidence in business performance and financial stability.

Market participants closely track Bank of Maharashtra’s quarterly numbers, especially given the recent focus on public sector banks’ profitability and balance-sheet strength. The upcoming results may influence investor sentiment and the bank’s share price in the short term.

Bank of Maharashtra operates a wide network of branches across the country and serves a large base of retail and corporate customers. Its financial updates attract attention from both institutional and retail investors.

The January 13 board meeting is expected to offer clarity on the bank’s performance during the October-December quarter and its approach to shareholder returns. Investors and analysts will watch the announcements closely once the meeting concludes.

Fintech major Groww made a strong debut on the stock markets on Wednesday, listing at ₹112 per share — about 12% higher than its issue price of ₹100. The performance signals strong investor confidence in India’s rapidly expanding digital investment and fintech space.

Market analysts noted that the listing was largely in line with expectations, driven by Groww’s strong brand presence, technology-led platform, and loyal user base among young investors.

Shivani Nyati, Head of Wealth at Swastika Investmart, said, “Groww’s debut at around 12% above its issue price reflects solid investor sentiment. The platform’s low customer acquisition cost, mobile-first strategy, and steady growth in assets under management (AUM) continue to be its major strengths.”

However, Nyati cautioned investors about high valuation multiples, margin pressures, and regulatory uncertainties in the fintech sector. She advised investors to book partial profits while holding the rest for the medium to long term, maintaining a stop-loss at ₹80.

Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research) at Mehta Equities, described Groww’s valuation as “fair and justified,” highlighting the company’s scalable digital model and increasing market share in equity, F&O, and mutual fund distribution. “We view Groww as a long-term structural story that reflects India’s growing retail participation in stock markets,” he said, setting a medium-term target of ₹125–130 per share.

Groww’s IPO, priced between ₹95 and ₹100, attracted strong institutional and retail interest. Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) subscribed 22 times, and Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs) subscribed 9 times. Analysts believe that, despite modest listing gains, Groww’s sustainable profitability and trusted brand make it one of the few fintech firms with long-term potential on Dalal Street.

Indian pharma stocks fell sharply on Friday following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 100% tariff on branded pharmaceutical imports. The move sparked concerns among investors, leading to a broad sell-off in the sector. The Nifty Pharma index dropped 2.4% in early trade, with all 20 constituent stocks in the red.

Sun Pharma fell 2.94% to Rs 1,548, Cipla declined 1.92% to Rs 1,475, and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories slipped 1.17% to Rs 1,275. Analysts said the reaction was largely sentiment-driven, as Indian pharmaceutical companies primarily export generic medicines, which are not immediately affected by the new tariff.

Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, explained that while Trump’s tariff announcement targets branded drugs, it has created short-term market volatility. “The risk to India’s generic drug exports is limited, but investor sentiment has been rattled,” he said.

Apart from the tariff news, foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows added pressure on the market. Despite the current downturn, experts suggest long-term prospects for pharma remain strong. Investors may view the dip as an opportunity to accumulate high-quality stocks driven by domestic demand and global growth.

The decline in Sun Pharma, Cipla, and Dr. Reddy’s highlights how geopolitical events and trade policies can impact sensitive sectors like healthcare. While the immediate impact is sentiment-based, ongoing US trade policies may continue to influence pharma stocks in the coming months.

Indian equity markets opened cautiously on Monday, with GIFT Nifty signaling a negative start amid a mix of domestic and global cues. Investors adopted a wait-and-watch approach ahead of key economic data releases and corporate earnings announcements. At the opening bell, the GIFT Nifty index showed modest losses, reflecting cautious sentiment among traders.

Domestic analysts noted that profit-taking and sector-specific pressures contributed to the subdued start. Banking and IT stocks saw early volatility, while energy and metal counters showed some resilience. Traders are closely monitoring global market trends, foreign fund flows, and currency movements, which continue to influence market direction.

Meanwhile, Asian markets traded higher, buoyed by optimism over global economic recovery and positive corporate earnings in the region. Japan’s Nikkei, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, and Shanghai Composite registered early gains, indicating broader regional confidence. Investors remain attentive to monetary policy signals from major central banks and geopolitical developments, which could sway market sentiment further.

Experts suggest that while short-term volatility is likely, long-term investors may find opportunities in fundamentally strong sectors. Market participants are advised to stay updated on macroeconomic indicators, corporate results, and global cues to navigate the day’s trading effectively.

In summary, Monday’s market opening saw GIFT Nifty lower, reflecting cautious domestic sentiment, while broader Asian indices traded higher, highlighting mixed global factors shaping investor decisions.

Indian stock markets are expected to start on a firm footing today, taking cues from global strength and improving domestic indicators. The Nifty 50 and Sensex are likely to open higher, with GIFT Nifty futures already trading in the green.

Across Asia, Japan’s Nikkei surged in morning trade, while other regional markets such as South Korea’s Kospi and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng were also positive. These gains came after weak U.S. labor data renewed hopes that the U.S. Federal Reserve could soon cut interest rates. Investors believe that softer monetary policy in the world’s largest economy will improve global liquidity, indirectly supporting emerging markets like India.

Domestically, investor sentiment has been buoyed by Fitch Ratings raising India’s GDP forecast to 6.9% for FY25, citing resilient consumption and steady growth in services. Inflation figures have stayed within manageable limits, reducing pressure on the Reserve Bank of India to tighten policy further. This combination of global and domestic positives is creating room for equity markets to extend their winning streak.

In terms of sectors, IT stocks are expected to be in focus following a large share buyback announcement from a major technology firm. Banking and financial stocks may also remain active amid healthy credit growth trends. Meanwhile, auto and metals counters could track movements in commodity prices and export data.

Currency, however, remains a risk. The Indian rupee recently touched a record low, raising concerns for import-heavy sectors such as oil marketing companies. On the trade front, global watchers are closely following tariff tensions, especially after recent U.S. moves targeting India and China.

Overall, experts say the opening bias is positive, but volatility cannot be ruled out as markets weigh global policy signals, commodity price swings, and domestic data. Traders are advised to stay selective, with defensive and high-quality names preferred in uncertain conditions.
