Sugar is hidden in more foods than most people realize, and it can sneak into your diet even when you think you’re making healthy choices. Dr Tarang Krishna, cancer specialist and managing director of Dr Krishna’s Cancer Healer Centre, Delhi, recently shared insights on Instagram about five common foods that are surprisingly high in sugar.

“Even items that seem normal in your daily meals can be loaded with sugar,” Dr Krishna explained. “Being aware of what you consume is crucial for maintaining health and preventing chronic illnesses.”

According to Dr Krishna, breakfast cereals are a major source of hidden sugar. Just one bowl can contain 3–4 tablespoons of sugar, often overlooked by those who consider them a healthy start to the day.

Flavoured yoghurts are another common culprit. While marketed as healthy, their sugar content can rival that of desserts, making them deceptively sweet.

Condiments like ketchup and processed items like sausages are also packed with sugar. “When eaten with fries or snacks, these can dramatically increase sugar intake,” Dr Krishna warns.

Even seemingly healthy packaged fruit juices are often high in added sugar. Labels claiming “100% fruit juice” can be misleading, as manufacturers frequently include sweeteners to enhance taste.

Finally, everyday tea and coffee contribute significantly to sugar consumption. Many people add two to three teaspoons of sugar each morning, which can add up quickly over time.

Dr Krishna advises tracking sugar intake carefully, emphasizing that hidden sugar is a silent contributor to health risks like obesity, diabetes, and even certain cancers. Awareness and moderation, he says, are key to reducing sugar in everyday diets.
