India made one change, with Rinku Singh replacing the rested Tilak Varma, who celebrates his 23rd birthday today.

Australia, led by Mitchell Marsh, are looking to level the series 2-2 after trailing 1-3. Marsh said the pitch looks great and expressed hope of finishing the tour on a positive note. “Lots to play for, both teams have played some great cricket. India bowled superbly last game,” he added.

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav once again lost the toss, prompting laughter among teammates. He said the team is focused on expressing themselves and sticking to their plan. “Until you’re winning games, losing tosses doesn’t matter. Everyone understood the conditions last match. We want to continue the same approach,” he said.

India aim to maintain their record of never losing a T20I series in Australia. The playing XIs are unchanged for Australia, while India’s lineup features Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah among others.

Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh chose to bowl first under dark skies. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill started brightly, adding 35 runs before Nathan Ellis removed Abhishek. Suryakumar Yadav joined Gill and hit his 150th T20I six with a stylish flick over square leg.

Rain stopped the match for 40 minutes after five overs, cutting it to 18 overs per side. When play resumed, Suryakumar and Gill attacked quickly, adding 62 runs from 35 balls. Their partnership looked set for a big score before another downpour ended the contest. At the stoppage, Suryakumar was on 39 and Gill on 37.

BCCI later confirmed that all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will miss the first three T20Is. He is recovering from a quadriceps injury and neck spasms suffered during the Adelaide ODI.

The India-Pakistan junior hockey match at the Sultan of Johor Cup in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, offered a refreshing display of sportsmanship. Players from both sides exchanged high-fives after the national anthems and ended the game with friendly handshakes following a thrilling 3-3 draw on Tuesday.

This cordial interaction stood in sharp contrast to last month’s Asia Cup cricket tournament, where Indian and Pakistani players avoided any on-field gestures. During that event, the Indian cricket team led by Suryakumar Yadav skipped the customary handshake with their Pakistani counterparts following Operation Sindoor. They later dedicated their victory to the families affected by the Pahalgam terror attack.

India also declined to receive the Asia Cup trophy from PCB and ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, who currently serves as Pakistan’s interior minister. Reflecting on the situation, Yadav had said, “Delhi is still far. We will see what happens when we play Pakistan next.”

Meanwhile, the atmosphere at the Sultan of Johor Cup was calm and competitive. The Pakistan Hockey Federation had reportedly instructed its players to stay focused on the game and avoid confrontation, ensuring a smooth and respectful contest.

The Asia Cup trophy not awarded to India created a storm on Sunday (September 28, 2025) during the presentation ceremony in Dubai. The Asia Cup champions Indian team refused to accept the winners’ trophy from ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and head of its cricket board.

As the Asia Cup trophy not awarded to India became clear, confusion spread across the podium. Mohsin Naqvi stood waiting with the trophy, but Indian players stayed 15 yards away and refused to move forward. The unusual standoff delayed the ceremony, leaving fans in shock.

Led by Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian squad chose to celebrate their victory without lifting the silverware. Players cheered with medals but avoided any interaction with Naqvi. The move highlighted India’s political and sporting concerns over receiving the trophy from a Pakistani leader.

Cricket analysts described the act as bold but controversial. Supporters praised the team’s stand, while others felt the missing trophy reduced the joy of the triumph. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later indicated it would raise the matter at the next ICC meeting, demanding the trophy be handed to the rightful winners.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to protest strongly against Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi after the Asia Cup trophy row. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made it clear that India expects the Asia Cup trophy and medals to be returned immediately.

The controversy began during the presentation ceremony in Dubai. India had won the Asia Cup but declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who also holds a senior political position in Pakistan. In a surprising move, Naqvi carried the trophy away from the stage. This act stunned players, officials, and fans watching across the world.

Suryakumar Yadav’s squad celebrated their victory on the champions’ podium, but the absence of the trophy left the moment incomplete. Many supporters felt the celebration lost its traditional sparkle. Images of the team without the trophy spread quickly on social media, sparking anger among Indian cricket fans.

Saikia condemned Naqvi’s action, calling it unsporting and disrespectful. “We came along with the medals. It is very unfortunate. We hope the trophy and medals come back soon,” he said. Saikia added that refusing the trophy from Naqvi did not give him any right to take it away.

The BCCI has already planned to raise the issue at the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Board meeting scheduled in November. Officials believe this incident has set a wrong precedent in international cricket. The matter, they say, goes beyond one tournament because it involves respect for players, fans, and the spirit of the game.

The Asia Cup trophy row has now escalated into a diplomatic and sporting controversy. Cricket bodies worldwide are watching closely, as the fallout may affect relations within the ACC. For India, the demand is simple: the Asia Cup trophy belongs to the winners, and it must be returned without delay.

Chasing three runs in the Super Over, India’s Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill secured victory with one delivery, as Sri Lanka could only manage two runs against Arshdeep Singh’s bowling. Earlier, Sri Lanka’s top order, led by Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera, shared a 127-run partnership to chase India’s 203-run target.

India’s innings was powered by Abhishek Sharma’s 61 and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 49. Sanju Samson and Axar Patel provided crucial late runs, helping the eight-time Asia Cup champions cross 200. Despite early wickets, the Indian batting unit recovered strongly to set a competitive total.

Sri Lanka’s resilient batting forced the tie despite wickets falling in the middle overs. Nissanka scored a brilliant century, but the team fell short in the Super Over. While the match was a dead rubber, Sri Lanka’s performance against the World No. 1 T20I side was encouraging ahead of the final.

Brief Scores: India 202/5 (Abhishek 61, Varma 49*; Asalanka 1-18) tie Sri Lanka 202 (Nissanka 107, Perera 58; Kuldeep 1-31). Super Over: India 3/0 beat Sri Lanka 2/2.

Arshdeep bowled a superb 19th over during regulation play and then took two wickets in the Super Over, restricting Sri Lanka to just two runs. Suryakumar finished the chase with a single ball to secure India’s sixth consecutive win in the tournament.

“It felt like a final. I told the boys to play it like a semi-final,” Yadav said. “We wanted energy and clarity. Arshdeep has been in such situations many times. His confidence says it all.”

He lauded the batting performance, noting Abhishek Sharma (61), Tilak Varma (49 not out), and Sanju Samson (39) for their contributions. “Sanju and Tilak took responsibility well. They maintained the tempo,” Yadav said.

The ICC hearing on Thursday (September 25, 2025) directed Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav to avoid political comments in the future. Match referee Richie Richardson gave the advice during the session after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a complaint.

Suryakumar Yadav pleaded not guilty to the charge. After India’s Asia Cup Super 4 win over Pakistan, he dedicated the victory to the armed forces for Operation Sindoor. He also showed support for victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. These remarks angered the PCB, which filed its complaint within the seven-day deadline.

The referee confirmed that the case falls under Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Sanctions could mean only a warning or a fine of 15% of match fees. Suryakumar attended the session with senior BCCI officials, who backed his position.

At the same time, the BCCI filed its own complaint against Pakistan players Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan. The Indian board accused them of making provocative gestures during the same game. Their hearing will take place on Friday (September 26) after Pakistan’s match against Sri Lanka.

The ICC hearing showed how political tones can quickly inflame cricketing ties. Both boards now wait for the verdict.
