Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced plans to create a comprehensive economic strategy to develop Pune as a Pune sustainable growth hub. The roadmap aims to set milestones for 2030, 2035, and 2047, focusing on economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

“The plan will define governance structures, phased milestones, and success metrics, while identifying support needed from the state and Union governments,” said Yogesh Mhase, Metropolitan Commissioner, PMRDA. The strategy will begin with a baseline assessment covering GDP, jobs, investments, productivity, population demographics, and income segments across the Pune metropolitan region, which includes the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and surrounding areas.

The study will also cover healthcare, education, urban mobility, transit-oriented development (ToD) opportunities, and sector-wise employment targets, including skilled manpower availability. Environmental measures such as air quality, renewable energy, and water and wastewater management will form a key part of the analysis.

Benchmarks for the region will be set against global city regions, identifying key stakeholders and strategic strengths like education, IT, tourism, and manufacturing. Growth drivers such as global capacity centres, green energy, and industrial clusters will be prioritized, with market size estimates for each sector.

Pune’s rapid growth, fueled by dominant sectors like IT, automobiles, healthcare, and tourism, has created urbanization pressures, including rising water demand and waste management challenges. The PMRDA roadmap will integrate sustainable infrastructure solutions such as Metro and Ring Road expansions, waste-to-energy projects, and Aerocity development, ensuring Pune evolves into a resilient Pune sustainable growth hub.

KHAMMAM: The Telangana Government has sanctioned ₹200 crore for a comprehensive drinking water project in Khammam city, fulfilling the efforts of Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao. The Municipal Administration Department issued official orders through GO No. 747, approving the release of funds. The project aims to provide safe and uninterrupted drinking water to every household in the city.

To ensure a year-round supply, the government designed a dual-source system. Water will be drawn from the Munneru River for eight months and from the Paleru Reservoir during the summer. This model guarantees continuous and clean water flow throughout the year.

The new project will upgrade the Danavaigudem Filter Bed system and expand existing infrastructure to meet growing urban needs. With Lakkaram Tank no longer sufficient for the city’s population, the plan includes new pipelines, filter beds, and pumping stations to improve water distribution efficiency.

Residents welcomed the government’s decision, calling it a major step toward sustainable urban growth. They thanked Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao for resolving the city’s long-standing water problems.

The semiconductor partnership supports India’s ambition to become a global chip hub by 2030. India is building fabrication plants and supply chains, while South Korea, home to Samsung and SK Hynix, offers expertise, investment, and technology to boost the sector.

Collaborative R&D in AI chips, 3D packaging, and joint innovation hubs will reduce India’s reliance on China-centric supply chains. It promises $100 billion in investments and one million new jobs within 15 years, strengthening India’s manufacturing and export competitiveness.

The pact, effective from October 1, expands market access for goods and services while promoting ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. It covers 14 chapters, including trade facilitation, intellectual property, sustainable development, and investment promotion. Key sectors such as dairy, coal, and agriculture remain protected under the deal.

The four EFTA nations — Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein — pledged $50 billion FDI in 10 years and another $50 billion later. These long-term investments target innovation, research, and high-value manufacturing, expected to generate one million direct jobs in India.

A dedicated India–EFTA Desk was launched in February 2025 to assist investors. It will promote collaborations in renewable energy, engineering, digital transformation, and life sciences.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel is scheduled to meet today in New Delhi. Led by BJP MP Anurag Thakur, the committee will finalize its future programme and select subjects for examination during the 2025–2026 term. The meeting will focus on adopting Memorandum No. 1, which outlines the committee’s work plan and priorities.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel includes 29 members—21 from the Lok Sabha and 8 from the Rajya Sabha. Two seats remain vacant. Members will review past reports and discuss new areas of focus, including steel scrap recycling and performance reviews of major public sector units like SAIL.

In its last meeting on September 18, the committee reviewed the organizational structure and performance of the Steel Authority of India Limited. Earlier, on August 4, it submitted recommendations for a national steel scrap database and proposed the Ministry of Steel as the nodal agency for data collection.

This committee plays a vital role in shaping India’s industrial policy. Today’s meeting will help define its direction for the coming year.
