Lapang began his career as a teacher before entering politics. He rose steadily through the ranks of the Congress party, where he spent more than 40 years. In 2018, he shifted to the National People’s Party (NPP), led by Conrad K. Sangma, to continue his service to the people.

During his tenure, Lapang played a key role in coalition building and development programs in Meghalaya. His ability to maintain stability in a state with frequent political shifts earned him respect across party lines.

Political leaders, colleagues, and citizens have expressed deep condolences. Many remembered his contributions to governance, rural development, and the welfare of tribal communities. His passing is seen as a great loss for Meghalaya, which he guided with dedication for decades.
