Washington: New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will meet President Donald Trump today at the White House in their first interaction since Mamdani’s election victory on November 4. Despite strong political disagreements, Mamdani said he is prepared to cooperate with the administration on issues that positively impact New Yorkers.

Mamdani said his team reached out to the White House to set up the meeting, stressing that affordability remains his top priority. “I will work with anyone to make life more affordable for the more than eight and a half million people who call this city home,” he said. He added that if any agenda harms New Yorkers, he would be the first to oppose it.

Calling the meeting a long-standing tradition between incoming NYC mayors and the federal administration, Mamdani said cooperation is crucial amid a nationwide affordability crisis. He noted that New Yorkers elected leaders who would confront rising living costs and ensure safety without compromising essential services.

She highlighted the negative impacts of tariffs and inconsistent H-1B visa rules on bilateral relations.

Kamlager-Dove noted that Democratic lawmakers sent a letter urging President Trump to reset ties with India. She expressed disappointment that no Republicans joined, stating Democrats carry the responsibility to support strategic international relationships. She also emphasized India’s role in regional stability and global innovation.

The lawmaker criticized the H-1B visa lottery system and $100,000 arbitrary rule, saying it harms US competitiveness and discourages skilled professionals, especially from India. She stressed the importance of the Quad Leadership Summit and strong Indo-Pacific partnerships.

Kamlager-Dove praised India’s measured diplomacy with China, Russia, and Pakistan, calling it a sign of strategic maturity. She warned that strained US-India ties could weaken regional stability and urged consistent engagement to strengthen cooperation on technology, defense, and economic growth.

Officials said this move aims to protect India’s competitiveness against other Asian nations facing similar US tariff rates.

India is also seeking the removal of the additional 25 per cent tariff on Russian oil, stressing that the country should not be singled out. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised concerns over “double standards” in access to energy and food supplies during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York, emphasizing sustained engagement on trade and priority areas. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also participated in the discussions, which focused on trade, tariffs, and broader bilateral issues.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry described the meetings as constructive. Rubio indicated the Trump administration may reconsider the additional Russian oil tariffs on India. MEA officials reiterated that India’s stance remains firm on energy purchases and fairness, highlighting statements urging European nations to curb Russian oil imports without imposing double standards.

US-India relations remain strong despite recent turbulence, according to a senior State Department official. Productive talks are ongoing to resolve differences over trade and Russian oil purchases.

Sergio Gor, a close aide of President Trump, has been nominated as US ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asia. He will work primarily from the State Department in New Delhi and engage with the President as required.

The official highlighted that India will host the Quad leaders’ summit this year. Trump’s attendance is expected, and planning for the summit is underway. Positive developments in the US-India relationship are anticipated in the coming months.

Issues like Russian oil tariffs, Chabahar port sanctions, and H-1B visa reforms were also discussed. The official clarified that the measures target adversaries broadly and are not solely directed against India. Close coordination with Indian officials continues to ensure smooth implementation of policies affecting trade and skilled worker mobility.

The Trump administration has announced stricter rules for H-1B visas, drawing criticism from immigration experts. Sarah Pierce called the stance “shockingly anti-business.” She warned that foreign students and workers are being discouraged from coming to the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security proposed scrapping the lottery system and using a weighted selection favoring higher-skilled applicants. A $100,000 fee per new application was also introduced, sparking concerns of legal challenges. Pierce said the fee is “absurdly high” and likely to be contested in court.

Critics argue the changes could hurt US universities and businesses. International students contribute significant revenue for tuition and scholarships, which benefits American students. The deportation of foreign workers in some industries highlighted conflicts between immigration policies and economic goals.

The White House defended the measures as a way to prioritize American workers and prevent system abuses. Pierce acknowledged existing H-1B issues but emphasized reforms could be done carefully without dismantling the program. Corporations are reportedly hesitant to speak out due to fear of the administration.

South Korea’s exports rose 13.5 percent year-on-year in the first 20 days of September, reaching $40.12 billion, according to the Korea Customs Service. However, per-day exports fell 10.6 percent due to more working days compared with last year. Imports grew 9.9 percent to $38.22 billion, leaving a trade surplus of $1.9 billion.

Semiconductors led the export surge, rising 27 percent to $9.49 billion and accounting for nearly 24 percent of total exports. Automobile shipments advanced 14.9 percent to $3.42 billion, while vessels exports soared 46.1 percent to $1.51 billion. Steel exports increased 7.1 percent to $2.53 billion, but chemical product shipments declined 4.5 percent to $2.68 billion.

Exports to China, South Korea’s largest trading partner, grew 1.6 percent to $7.77 billion. Shipments to the U.S. rose 6.1 percent to $6.55 billion, but the daily average fell 16.4 percent amid new U.S. tariffs. In July, Seoul and Washington agreed to lower reciprocal tariffs on Korean goods to 15 percent in exchange for a $350 billion Korean investment commitment in the U.S.

August exports rose 1.3 percent year-on-year to $58.4 billion, driven by strong semiconductor demand. Analysts expect trade performance to remain a key growth driver, despite ongoing tariff pressures and global uncertainties.

The advisory came after President Donald Trump imposed a $100,000 annual fee on the visa program. An internal email, reviewed by Reuters, urged employees to act immediately. Those already in the US were told to remain there “for the foreseeable future.” The company strongly recommended that visa holders outside the country return by September 20.

JPMorgan issued a similar advisory to its staff. It asked H-1B employees abroad to re-enter the US before the September 21 deadline.Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended the new rules. He said earlier visa policies allowed low-wage workers who relied on government aid. He argued that the new policy would remove the “bottom quartile” while adding over $100 billion to the US Treasury.

President Trump stated that the revenue would cut national debt and reduce taxes. However, the fee has created concern in India, as about 71% of H-1B visa holders are Indian.Indian IT companies like Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and TCS rely heavily on H-1B visas. Industry leaders fear higher costs and reduced talent mobility in the tech sector.

The Federal Reserve cut its key interest rate by a quarter-point on Wednesday, signaling two more cuts by the end of the year as concerns about the US labour market grow. The move, the first rate cut since December, lowered the short-term rate to 4.1%, down from 4.3%. Fed officials, led by Chairman Jerome Powell, had held the rate steady earlier this year as they assessed the effects of tariffs, immigration policies, and other Trump administration measures on inflation and the economy.

However, the focus has shifted from inflation to job growth, as hiring has slowed significantly in recent months, and the unemployment rate has risen.

The rate cut boosted IT stocks in India, benefiting companies with a strong presence in the North American market. LTIMindtree rose nearly 3%, while Infosys, Wipro, and Mphasis gained around 2%.
Following the Fed’s rate cut, the Indian stock market opened on a positive note.

US President Donald Trump has officially named Antifa a “major terrorist organisation,” tying the anti-fascist movement to increasing political violence. The announcement came Thursday via Trump’s Truth Social account. This followed the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, allegedly by Antifa sympathiser Tyler Robinson.

Federal investigators found bullet casings with anti-fascist slogans and references to “Bella Ciao,” an Italian resistance song. Robinson confessed to the killing in a Discord channel and left a note outlining his plan. White House officials, including Stephen Miller, pointed to this case as proof of left-wing extremism. They argue that organisations bankroll violence.

Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” isn’t a formal organisation. Instead, it consists of decentralised groups opposed to fascism, racism, and authoritarianism. Some members participate in direct action, including counter-protests and doxxing. While these tactics sometimes lead to violent clashes, critics argue Antifa is more of an ideology than an organised group. They believe Trump’s declaration targets political dissent and weakens civil liberties.

This move stirs controversy about political violence and civil rights in the US, with many questioning the limits of protest movements and law enforcement power.

Washington: President Donald Trump announced the removal of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, accusing her of mortgage fraud. He alleged that Cook misrepresented her primary residence on loan documents in 2021, a charge that was referred to the Justice Department by Bill Pulte, chief of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Cook strongly rejected the allegations and Trump’s decision. She stated the move was not legally valid and confirmed she would not step down. Cook’s legal team, led by attorney Abbe Lowell, is preparing to challenge the dismissal, calling it an attack on the independence of the Federal Reserve.

Legal experts argue the President may have overstepped his powers. The Federal Reserve Act allows removal of governors only “for cause,” generally linked to misconduct during service, not past personal matters. This creates a legal gray area that could lead to a prolonged court battle.

The dismissal has triggered political and economic debate across the US. Observers warn that interfering with the Fed’s independence could shake market confidence and set a dangerous precedent. The case may eventually reach the Supreme Court, testing the limits of presidential authority over independent institutions.
