Hungary has firmly rejected claims by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Hungarian reconnaissance drones violated Ukraine’s airspace. Zelensky said preliminary assessments suggested the drones may have targeted Ukraine’s border industrial areas.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto denied the allegation, saying Zelensky is “losing himself in anti-Hungarian sentiments” and chasing imaginary threats. The minister called the claims baseless in a statement posted on Facebook.

Relations between Budapest and Kyiv have been tense for years. Hungary has raised concerns over the rights of the ethnic Hungarian minority in Ukraine and criticised attacks on the Druzhba oil pipeline, vital for its energy supplies from Russia. Hungary also opposes Ukraine’s EU accession due to minority protections and impacts on the EU’s agricultural subsidy system.

Despite political disputes, Hungary has provided humanitarian support since the Ukraine conflict began in February 2022. The country opened its borders to refugees and even established Ukrainian-language schools for refugee children, showing cooperation beyond diplomatic disagreements.

Jaishankar attended the G4 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York with counterparts from Japan, Germany, and Brazil. The ministers reiterated the need for comprehensive United Nations reform, including expansion of the Security Council to reflect 21st-century geopolitical realities.

Jaishankar updated on X, noting the meeting assessed the current Inter-Governmental Negotiation (IGN) process. The G4 nations emphasized greater representation for developing countries to make the Security Council more inclusive and effective.

On the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar held bilateral talks with ministers from Australia, Egypt, and Malaysia. He also highlighted global counter-terrorism efforts, stating that actions against terrorism contribute to international peace and development.

He criticised selective sanctions imposed on nations under the pretext of pressuring Russia during the Ukraine war. Jaishankar warned that such measures disrupt supply chains, logistics, and economic access, creating additional pressures on countries like India.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to meet US President Donald Trump next week at the United Nations. He aims to press Washington for stronger sanctions on Russia amid escalating attacks.Zelenskyy posted on X that he expects “strong sanctions steps” from the United States while Europe is doing its part. Trump had earlier signaled readiness for “major sanctions” if NATO allies stop buying Russian oil.

The Ukrainian leader also intends to discuss long-term security guarantees to protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned against any Western troops stationed in Ukraine.

Moscow launched one of its largest overnight assaults in recent months, firing 40 missiles and 580 drones. At least three people were killed and dozens injured. NATO allies responded by strengthening defenses along Europe’s eastern borders.

Polish jets were scrambled in a preventative operation after strikes near its frontier, while the UK patrolled Polish skies under NATO’s Eastern Sentry mission. Tensions rose when three Russian jets reportedly entered Estonian airspace for 12 minutes. Estonia confirmed the breach, but Russia denied the incident.
