According to court documents and sources, the Supreme Court’s ruling rested on three primary reasons:

1. Compliance with Environmental Norms

The bench observed that Vantara had adhered to all environmental regulations and mandatory clearances. Independent audits presented before the court indicated no violation of wildlife protection laws, as was earlier alleged by petitioners.

2. Evidence of Conservation Efforts

The court noted that Vantara’s initiatives—particularly around animal rescue, rehabilitation, and rewilding—demonstrated a genuine commitment to conservation. Reports submitted by expert committees highlighted measurable improvements in animal health, habitat restoration, and biodiversity around the project areas.

3. Lack of Substantive Proof Against Vantara

Petitioners failed to provide strong evidence to support allegations of misuse of land or resources. The judges concluded that the accusations were largely speculative and lacked documentary backing. As a result, the court ruled in favour of Reliance, stating that there was no legal ground to sustain the charges.

The verdict has sparked mixed reactions. While Reliance welcomed the ruling as a validation of its “commitment to conservation and sustainability,” environmental activists expressed disappointment, arguing that corporate influence should not override independent scrutiny.

Analysts believe the decision could set a precedent for future cases involving private-sector participation in environmental projects. The ruling reaffirms that as long as companies comply with laws and demonstrate measurable impact, courts are unlikely to interfere.

For Reliance, the judgment clears hurdles for Vantara to expand its conservation work, which includes large-scale animal rescue and rehabilitation centres in Gujarat.
