Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and millions of federal workers have gone unpaid as the US government shutdown enters its 39th day. Essential services like air traffic control are being disrupted, leading to nearly 1,000 flight cancellations across major airports.

The crisis stems from a political standoff between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate over a temporary funding resolution. The measure, known as a “continuing resolution,” has been blocked by a filibuster that requires 60 votes to overcome. With only 53 votes, Republicans have been unable to move forward, despite pressure from former President Donald Trump to end the rule.

Democrats insist they will only support the funding bill if healthcare subsidies under Obamacare are extended. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said his party is ready to pass the bill once affordable healthcare is included. Republicans, however, refuse to negotiate on Obamacare provisions until the shutdown ends.

The prolonged shutdown is hurting both parties. Trump blames it for Republican losses, while Democrats face backlash as millions lose access to food programmes and salaries. Economists warn the impasse could cut US economic growth by up to two per cent this quarter.

The US State Department confirmed that Ashley Tellis, a noted expert on India and South Asia, was arrested on October 11. He faces charges of unlawfully keeping classified national defense documents. The arrest was announced by US Attorney Lindsey Halligan from the Eastern District of Virginia.

Investigators said Tellis removed secret papers from Defense Department offices and kept them at his home in Vienna, Virginia. Surveillance showed him printing “Secret” and “Top Secret” files between September 12 and 25, 2025. The FBI reported that he hid the papers inside notepads and placed them in a leather briefcase.

Court records also described Tellis’s meetings with Chinese officials in recent years. They reportedly discussed issues like artificial intelligence, Iran-China ties, and US-Pakistan relations. In one meeting, he carried a manila envelope and did not return with it.

Tellis serves as a senior adviser to the State Department and a contractor for the Defense Department’s Office of Net Assessment. If convicted, he could face ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Sergio Gor, recently confirmed as the youngest-ever U.S. Ambassador to India, began his role with a six-day high-level visit to New Delhi. Arriving on October 9, Gor met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a dynamic start to his diplomatic mission. His visit reflected Washington’s urgency to strengthen strategic cooperation with India amid global challenges.

During his first day, Gor met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Discussions focused on trade, defense, technology, and critical minerals. Gor highlighted the “strong friendship” between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing shared goals under the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

At his meeting with PM Modi, Gor presented a signed photograph from President Trump, symbolizing the leaders’ enduring rapport. On social media, Gor expressed optimism about deepening the partnership, while PM Modi said he was confident Gor’s tenure would strengthen India-U.S. ties further.

Gor’s appointment underscores the importance of India in Trump’s Asia policy. Analysts believe his energy and political acumen could advance cooperation on technology, defense, and minerals, setting a positive tone for a new phase in bilateral relations.
